A Dallas sushi and poke chain has quietly opened its doors just across from Texas Christian University, and for a few more days, nearly everything on the menu is discounted. Picazo Sushi has entered a soft-opening phase at 3113 University Drive in Fort Worth, with all menu items priced 30 to 50 percent off through Friday, September 18.
The new location occupies the space formerly held by MEGU French Japanese Cuisine, an upscale sushi restaurant known for fish flown in daily from Japan, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. MEGU, a fine-dining fusion concept helmed by NYC-trained chef Peter Liang, had operated at the site since early 2024 before closing in late July 2026, as reported by CultureMap Dallas. The restaurant had even earned a nomination for Restaurant of the Year in the 2025 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards before shutting down. Liang had previously run Ginza French Japanese Cuisine in Weatherford and honed his culinary skills in New York City before bringing his dual-menu concept to the TCU area, per the same outlet.
From Dallas's Maple Avenue to Fort Worth's Front Door
Picazo Sushi first opened in Dallas in 2022, and now has a Fort Worth location, according to Picazo Sushi & Poke.
The Fort Worth menu leans into the same playful fusion style, with sushi burgers built from two crispy rice buns packed with sushi-roll fillings, and sushi tacos made with crispy tempura shells stuffed with fish and vegetables, according to the Star-Telegram's reporting. Picazo also serves standard specialty rolls, poke bowls, ramen, spicy tuna on crispy rice, sashimi and nigiri, with California, Philadelphia and rainbow rolls rounding out the menu. Poke bowls come with a choice of two proteins and can be built with crab mix, cucumber, corn, carrot, edamame, toppings and sauce, and menu prices generally run between $10 and $20.
Soft-Opening Hours and What's Nearby
During the soft-opening stretch, Picazo is open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., though the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. The location sits directly across from the TCU campus store, putting it in the middle of one of Fort Worth's busiest university retail strips.
That strip is seeing plenty of turnover. Less than a mile away at 3005 S. University Drive, Dallas-based Hawaiian restaurant Pine Isle is opening inside the former Dutch's Burrito Bar space, according to CultureMap Dallas, adding indoor seating and an outdoor patio. As of the end of July, Pine Isle was more than halfway through renovations and had begun hiring staff, per the Star-Telegram. Pine Isle founder Kevin Singharaj first launched the concept as a takeout-only spot in Dallas in 2025 before deciding to expand west.
A Corridor Built for Student Foot Traffic
The building housing Picazo has its own layered history. Before either sushi restaurant moved in, the space was converted from a bank building into a coffee shop, hosting Dwell Coffee & Biscuits starting in 2019 and later Overflow Coffee, according to PaperCity Magazine. Hoodline covered that early coffee shop debut back in 2019, long before the site's transformation into a sushi destination.
The restaurant sits on the ground level of Campus Office Tower, a six-story, 19,977-square-foot office building constructed in 1976. Woodcrest Capital operates its own primary offices in the same building, directly across from TCU. South University Drive and West Berry Street meet at the adjacent intersection.
Texas Christian University enrolled a record incoming first-year class of more than 2,800 students for the Fall 2026 semester, pushing total enrollment to nearly 13,000, according to the university. TCU's enrollment figure is nearly 13,000.
Part of a Bigger North Texas Sushi Wave
Picazo's arrival comes as Kura Revolving Sushi Bar expands its North Texas footprint, as Hoodline has reported previously. Fort Worth's dining scene also includes sushi and chef-driven concepts.
For now, Picazo's soft opening gives Fort Worth diners a limited window to try the new menu at a discount before regular pricing kicks in. Whether the sushi tacos and sushi burgers can carve out a lasting niche across from campus may depend on how well the concept holds up once the half-off deals disappear and TCU's record class of students settles into its dining habits for the semester.
