A driver was killed late Monday night after an SUV crossed Bangerter Highway at high speed, jumped a curb, and slammed into a West Valley City charter school building before bursting into flames. The crash happened at about 11:23 p.m. at American Preparatory Academy, sending emergency crews racing to the scene of a fully engulfed vehicle fire just outside the school.
Witnesses told police they saw an Acura SUV traveling eastbound on 3100 South at high speed before it crossed Bangerter Highway and struck the school building, according to KSL. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and recovered the driver's body, which was taken to a medical examiner's office, per Gephardt Daily. As of Tuesday morning, the driver's identity had not been confirmed.

School Building Suffers Exterior Damage
The school sustained fire-related damage and a broken window, though preliminary inspections showed no structural or extensive destruction, the same Gephardt Daily report notes. The campus, located at 3636 W 3100 S, serves approximately 1,550 students in grades K-12 as one of several Utah Charter Academies sites in the Salt Lake Valley, according to Niche. Officials were working to determine the nature and extent of the damage.
A Corridor With a History of Crashes
The stretch of roadway around the crash is in West Valley City. West Valley City logged 3,257 motor vehicle collisions in 2024, placing it second among all Utah municipalities for total crashes behind only Salt Lake City, according to the McMinn Law Firm. The broader traffic-safety discussion does not identify countywide fatal-crash data for Salt Lake County.
The crash also follows a fatal wreck in the same city. A 15-year-old high school student was killed and four others were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash near 4100 South and 8400 West, according to KUTV, an incident that prompted area residents to petition local officials for roadway safety upgrades.
Statewide Traffic Deaths Down, But Teen Fatalities Spike
Utah recorded 264 traffic fatalities in 2025, a decrease from 277 deaths in 2024 and the state's lowest annual traffic death total since 2019, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. But that overall improvement masked a troubling trend among younger drivers: statewide traffic fatalities involving teenagers nearly doubled in 2025, rising to 31 deaths compared to 18 in 2024, per the same UDOT release.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the SUV to leave the roadway. The driver's exact speed and whether mechanical failure, a medical emergency, or impairment played a role in the crash remain unknown.
