La Bamba Mexican Grill, the El Mirage taqueria known for Edson Garcia's al pastor tacos and pineapple vinegar, is no longer serving customers. The compact restaurant drew diners from around the Phoenix metro area with handmade tortillas, aguas frescas and elote, but its current status remains unclear.
According to Phoenix New Times, La Bamba's online listings do not agree about what happened. Its Facebook page says the restaurant is temporarily closed, while Google lists it as permanently shuttered and Yelp displays a permanent-closure notice. The restaurant's phone number has been disconnected, the outlet reported, and customers have found the doors locked without an explanation.
A Signature Taco Built on Pineapple Vinegar
La Bamba was listed at 12102 W Thunderbird Road in El Mirage, according to Yelp. Phoenix New Times reported that Garcia ran the kitchen and developed the small menu, including al pastor tacos seasoned with pineapple vinegar and served on yellow corn tortillas in shareable platters.
Phoenix New Times previously described the menu as including horchata, watermelon agua fresca, elote and Bamba-style tacos finished with cheese. The report also noted the restaurant's colorful street-food-themed interior.
Thunderbird Road Has Seen Vacancies and Redevelopment Plans
The uncertainty comes amid signs of changing commercial activity along West Thunderbird Road. Separately, a 2024 City of El Mirage staff report said a property at 11919 W Thunderbird Road had been vacant and undeveloped for several years before being proposed for four office, personal-services and retail suites, according to a City of El Mirage staff report. The report said the site had previously been used as a furniture store.
A Neighborhood Favorite With Awards to Match
The restaurant's recognition extended beyond its immediate neighborhood: Phoenix New Times said La Bamba won its Best of Phoenix award for best tacos in 2020 and 2022 and later included the taqueria on a list of the Valley's top taco shops. The publication also reported that construction workers and families were among its returning customers.
That reputation fits into a broader picture of Arizona's taco scene. Eight Arizona taco shops made Yelp's list of the 100 best tacos in the country, including one that ranked as high as No. 6, according to azfamily.com. That report noted California led all states with 45 spots on the list, while Arizona placed third nationally with eight, just behind Texas's nine. Arizona has built its taco identity around Sonoran-style preparations, with meats and vegetables charred over an open flame, azfamily.com reported.
An Uncertain Future
The reason for La Bamba's closure remains unclear. Yelp also lists America's Taco Shop in Phoenix as closed, according to the platform. No statement from Garcia or another restaurant representative has surfaced to resolve whether La Bamba's closure is temporary, as Facebook indicates, or permanent, as Google and Yelp indicate.
For now, customers have no confirmed reopening date or explanation for the conflicting listings.
