A 35-year-old Elkhart man is behind bars without bond after police say he stabbed and beat another man so severely that officers dispatched for what began as a routine medical call instead found themselves standing in a crime scene. Jeffery M. Estep was arrested Wednesday and now faces a single count of attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, in connection with a July stabbing that left a 46-year-old victim with a severe head injury.
According to the Elkhart Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Maple Row at approximately 4:28 p.m. on July 23 after a report of an injured man. Elkhart Fire Department medics located the victim at the scene and transported him to a hospital for evaluation and treatment, per the department's release. Property records list a single-family home at 614 Maple Row, according to Realtor.com.
A Medical Call That Turned Into a Crime Scene
What first responders initially understood to be an unknown medical situation quickly changed once officers arrived. ABC57 reported that the call began as a report of an injured man before officers on scene discovered evidence of an assault and stabbing, treating the victim before hospital transport. The department's own account confirms officers gathered evidence indicating an assault and stabbing had occurred and located a crime scene at the address.
An Elkhart Police Department detective went on to identify a suspect in the case, leading the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office to file formal charges in Elkhart Circuit Court. That court assignment is not incidental — under Elkhart County's local administrative rules, attempted murder charges filed in the county, except those involving child victims, must be routed specifically to Circuit Court rather than County Superior Court. The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office is led by Vicki Elaine Becker, who has held the elected post since 2016 following 14 years as chief deputy prosecuting attorney, according to information published by the state of Indiana.
A Familiar Name in Elkhart's Court System
This is not Estep's first brush with violent crime allegations in Elkhart. He was previously charged in December 2024 with attempted robbery and theft tied to an alleged September 2024 confrontation at Treasure Island Park, where a driver told police he was punched through his car window and then chased to the parking lot of the police station itself, according to 95.3 MNC. Prosecutors in that case cited surveillance footage from a local business and the police lot to corroborate the driver's account.
The current case carries case number 20C01-2609-F1-000015, and the Elkhart Police Department's tip line references the incident under case number 20260723023. Estep remains in the custody of the Elkhart County Jail, held without bond. The case remains pending.
What a Level 1 Felony Conviction Could Mean
If convicted, Estep faces a sentencing range of 20 to 40 years in prison, with an advisory sentence of 30 years and a potential fine of up to $10,000, according to Justia Law. Level 1 felonies represent the most serious felony classification in Indiana short of unclassified murder charges.
The case adds to a string of violent stabbings that have drawn scrutiny in Elkhart this year.
