Memphis Police officers were sent to the 3100 block of Madewell Street just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday after a call came in about a shooting at an apartment complex in the Frayser neighborhood. As of the initial report, it had not been determined whether anyone was injured, and no suspect had been identified.
According to WREG, police have not said whether the shooting happened inside the apartment complex itself or nearby, and the outlet reported it plans to gather more information and update the story as details emerge. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH, a tip line that offers cash rewards of up to $4,000 for information leading to an arrest in homicide cases, according to CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County. The organization has helped solve 17 murder cases so far in 2026 through its independent board and donor-funded rewards program.
A Block With a Violent Recent Past
Tuesday's call is only the latest in a string of shootings tied to the same stretch of Madewell, much of it centered on the Greenbriar Apartments complex. Hoodline previously reported that a man and woman were critically wounded in the 3100 block of Madewell Drive last month before showing up at a nearby fire station seeking help.
That August incident followed an even earlier shooting in the same block. Memphis Police responded on February 14, 2026 to a shooting in the 3100 block of Madewell Drive in which a male victim was hospitalized, and surveillance video captured a suspect firing a handgun toward a group of people, according to the Memphis Police Department. Two weeks after that, in April, Hoodline covered another unannounced Greenbriar gunfire incident at the same complex.
Repeated Incidents at Greenbriar Apartments
The pattern goes back further still. In November 2024, a triple shooting at the Greenbriar Apartments in the 3100 block of Madewell Street left one person dead and two others injured, as reported by localmemphis.com. More recently, on May 21, 2026, police responded to a shooting at Greenbriar in which a 15-year-old male victim was wounded; officers located the teenager at the complex before transporting him in non-critical condition, per the same outlet.
Gun violence in multi-family housing has not been limited to Madewell Street. In March 2026, a fatal shooting at the Corning Village apartments on Briercrest Lane, also in Frayser, left one person dead, highlighting what localmemphis.com described as ongoing public-safety concerns across the district's apartment complexes. North Memphis complexes have frequently been designated as key areas for task force patrols, the outlet noted.
Citywide Crime Numbers Tell a Different Story
The localized violence stands in contrast to broader trends. Memphis Police Department data shows citywide murders dropped 60% and aggravated assaults declined 30% during the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier, a decline the department has attributed to its Sustain the Gains strategy and federal task force partnerships, according to the Memphis Police Department. End-of-year figures for 2025 showed 643 injury-causing shooting incidents citywide, a 38% decrease from 2024, when more than 1,000 people were wounded, the department reported.
Preliminary data from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission found that major violent crime, which includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, fell 31.5% during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Still, an analysis of FBI crime statistics by Security.org ranked Memphis highest among the 50 largest U.S. cities for overall crime rate in 2025, recording 6,816.7 offenses per 100,000 residents.
Tennessee has allowed permitless handgun carry for eligible adults 21 and older since July 2021 under state law, permitting open or concealed carry without a state permit, though property owners and designated sensitive locations may still prohibit firearms.
