A 30-year-old San Leandro man was sentenced to six years in state prison this week for raping a 14-year-old girl who had become intoxicated at a house party in Foster City in 2024. Shango Jaja Greer Jr. was found guilty on four felony counts by a San Mateo County jury on August 5, and a judge has now ordered him to register as a sex offender for life.
Greer, who was 27 at the time of the offense, was found guilty on all four felony charges, according to the KRON4 report on the case. Prosecutors said Greer first met the victim at Sequoia Station shopping mall, a Redwood City shopping center built in 1990 adjacent to Caltrain, with transfer-hub and station improvements envisioned as future possibilities, according to OWN Real Estate.
From there, the case moved to Foster City, where the victim had invited Greer to a party at a vacant apartment, per the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office. The girl became sick and began throwing up after drinking at the gathering on April 11, 2024. Prosecutors stated that Greer had sex with her while she was intoxicated, then left the apartment afterward.
How the Case Came to Light
The victim told a sibling what had happened, and she later underwent a hospital examination. DNA collected during that exam was identified as Greer's, according to the DA's office.
According to prosecutors, Greer told police the victim had said she was 18 and claimed she had sobered up before the sexual encounter occurred. The jury found Greer guilty of all four charges, including oral copulation of an intoxicated person. Under California law, Section 261.5 covers unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor; a reasonable, good-faith belief that the minor was over 18 can be a defense, and consent is not an element of statutory rape, per Eisner Gorin LLP.
Legal Standard and Sentencing Range
The rape charge itself was built on California's intoxication-based non-consent standard. Under Penal Code 261(a)(3), rape of an intoxicated person occurs when a person is prevented from resisting because of an intoxicating substance and the defendant knew or reasonably should have known of that condition, according to Kelmansky Law. That statute carries a sentencing range of 3, 6, or 8 years in state prison, meaning Greer's six-year term fell squarely in the middle of the standard range for this type of conviction.
San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Renee C. Reyna ordered Greer's lifetime sex offender registration. Reyna was appointed to the county bench by Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2021 after serving as a court commissioner since 2019; before that, she was a senior attorney at the California Supreme Court, according to the UC Davis School of Law.

Greer was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
