A Gilbert police officer shot and killed a man early Tuesday morning after the man allegedly charged at him while holding a knife, following a call from a woman worried about her adult son's safety. The shooting happened outside a home on the 900 block of San Remo Avenue, in a residential neighborhood near Lindsay and Guadalupe roads. No officers or bystanders were hurt.
The confrontation began around 4:30 a.m. when a woman called police to report safety concerns about her adult son, according to ktar.com. Police say that when officers arrived, the man came at an officer holding a knife. The officer ordered him to stop multiple times, but the man kept advancing before the officer opened fire, the outlet reported. ABC15 Arizona also reported that a man was killed in the officer-involved shooting in Gilbert.
Man Died at Hospital After Being Shot
The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police confirmed that no officers or members of the public were injured during the encounter, per the same account from the ktar.com report.
As is standard practice for officer-involved shootings in the region, the Mesa Police Department is investigating the incident on behalf of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, an outside agency that reviews use-of-force cases among neighboring departments. That arrangement keeps the investigation independent from the Gilbert Police Department, whose officer was involved in the shooting.
Not the First Deadly Encounter Near That Intersection
This is not the first fatal police shooting reported in the vicinity of Lindsay and Guadalupe roads. In June 2025, two Gilbert officers shot and killed an armed man near the same intersection after responding to a welfare check, according to fox10phoenix.com. In that earlier case, officers found the man seated in his vehicle, and at about 6:04 p.m. he presented a firearm before the shooting occurred; he was pronounced dead at the scene, and the two officers involved were not hurt, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.
Whether Tuesday's shooting is connected in any way to that earlier case has not been established. Details surrounding this latest shooting, including the identities of the man and the officer involved, have not yet been released, and it remains unclear whether the officer has been placed on administrative leave, a standard step in many departments following a use-of-force incident.
