A 41-year-old Independence man is facing child rape and sodomy charges after Kenton County detectives, backed by a regional SWAT team, executed a search warrant at his home on the 1800 block of Autumn Maple Drive. Johnny Bell was taken into custody as officers secured the scene, and he now sits in the Kenton County Detention Center while the investigation into allegations involving juvenile victims continues.
The Kenton County Police Department opened the investigation into the abuse allegations and arrested Bell after detectives obtained the search warrant for his residence, according to WKRC. Police temporarily closed the roadway around the property and issued a CodeRED emergency alert to residents in the surrounding area. Kenton County operates CodeRED in partnership with Boone County as a time-sensitive emergency notification system that can alert residents by phone, text, and email, according to the Kenton County KY Official Website.
SWAT Team Draws on Regional Muscle
The Northern Kentucky SWAT team that assisted detectives in executing the warrant is a multi-jurisdictional tactical unit made up of 29 law enforcement agencies across Kenton and Campbell counties, according to LINK nky. In 2026, Independence Police Captain Michael D. Brock was appointed commander of the team, and Campbell County Police Captain Christopher J. Lauer II was appointed assistant commander.
Once the scene was secured, officers took Bell into custody, executed the search warrant, and collected evidence from the property, the same WKRC report states. Bell was subsequently charged with second-degree rape, third-degree sodomy, and an additional charge that has not yet been specified.
What the Charges Carry Under Kentucky Law
Second-degree rape under Kentucky Revised Statute 510.050 is a Class C felony, punishable by five to ten years in prison and fines between $1,000 and $10,000, and applies when an adult has sexual intercourse with a victim under 14 or a person who is mentally incapacitated, according to FindLaw. Third-degree sodomy under KRS 510.090 is a Class D felony carrying one to five years, which applies when an offender 21 or older engages in deviate sexual intercourse with someone under 16, per the Jackson County Sun.
As of WKRC's report, bond had not yet been set for Bell, and he remained lodged at the Kenton County Detention Center.
