Kansas City is waking up to clear skies and another dangerous heat day, with temperatures around 81 degrees early Sunday and an afternoon high near 98. The heat index could reach 104, and an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect as the city heads into a scorching Labor Day stretch.
A few showers and thunderstorms could develop after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the chance continuing into the evening.
Heat Warning Runs Through Tuesday
The National Weather Service warning remains in effect, with heat-index values above 105 possible in the Kansas City area. Officials are urging residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible and check on neighbors, older adults and anyone working outside.
Young children and pets should never be left in unattended vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes. Kansas City Parks and Recreation says its community centers can serve as free cooling centers during regular operating hours; its cooling-center list includes locations around the city.

Monday will be mostly sunny with a high near 97 degrees and a heat index around 101. East-southeast winds near 8 mph may offer a little movement in the air, but not much relief from the heat.
