A driver was extricated from a car after it rolled over in a Kearns neighborhood, leaving the person in critical condition. The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. at 5280 West and 5200 South, according to officials on scene.
Unified Fire crews responded to the wreck and pulled the driver from the vehicle, according to FOX 13 News Utah. The driver was the only person in the car, and no other vehicles were involved. Officials said the driver is expected to survive despite the severity of the crash, and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators reported that weather and vehicle speed were factors in the rollover, per the same account. Under Utah Code § 41-6a-601, drivers are required to travel at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for existing road and weather conditions — meaning a car can be cited for going too fast for conditions even if it never exceeds the posted limit, according to the Utah State Legislature.
A Dangerous Pattern on Utah Roads
Speed-related crashes are a serious concern statewide. Single-vehicle rollovers like Thursday's crash carry particularly high stakes.
Despite that risk, Utah's overall traffic safety picture has been improving. Preliminary state transportation reports showed 264 traffic deaths across Utah in 2025, a 5 percent drop from 277 fatalities in 2024 and the state's lowest annual toll since 2019, according to Utah.gov. Nationally, early estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed U.S. traffic fatalities fell 3.8 percent in 2024 to 39,345, dropping below 40,000 annual deaths for the first time since 2020.

Kearns officially incorporated as a city on May 1, 2024, after the Utah Legislature passed House Bill 35, completing its transition from a metro township, per the City of Kearns.
The crash is not the first serious speed-related wreck along the 5200 South corridor. A severe single-vehicle crash on 5200 South left two men hospitalized in serious condition after their speeding car left the roadway near 4260 West and caught fire on church grounds, according to KSL.com. It remains unclear whether investigators in Thursday's crash will refer the case to a specialized crash reconstruction unit or issue citations once the driver's condition stabilizes.
