Charles Kelley, the co-lead vocalist and founding member of country trio Lady A, has revealed he is battling multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer, sharing the news in an Instagram video alongside his wife, Cassie McConnell Kelley. The 45-year-old singer said the diagnosis came after he experienced a couple of random rib fractures that led doctors to order blood tests, which ultimately found the cancer.
According to WBAL NewsRadio, Kelley described multiple myeloma as rare. It is a type of blood cancer in which too many plasma cells crowd out normal bone-marrow cells. The disease develops in bone marrow and can spread throughout the body, and it's considered the most common type of plasma cell tumor. Kelley is unusually young for this diagnosis — the American Cancer Society projected roughly 36,000 new multiple myeloma cases in the U.S. for 2026, with the average patient diagnosed at age 69 and less than 1% of cases occurring in people under 35.
Why Rib Fractures Were the First Warning Sign
The path to Kelley's diagnosis followed a pattern doctors see often. Bone pain is often the first symptom of multiple myeloma, while broken bones can be a complication, since abnormal plasma cells accumulate and damage bone tissue, per the Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic lists age as a risk factor and says the disease generally affects older adults. Men are more likely than women to develop the disease, per the same WBAL report.
Despite the diagnosis, Kelley said he remains hopeful and feels young and healthy. He has six months of treatment planned and expects it will not be too invasive, telling followers he anticipates continuing to physically feel like himself while he works. Lady A has upcoming shows on the calendar, including several Christmas dates, and Kelley said he plans to keep performing through treatment.
Treatment Advances Reshaping the Outlook
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has said the disease has transformed into a manageable chronic condition for many patients thanks to recent FDA approvals of targeted immunotherapies, bispecific antibodies, and CAR T-cell therapies, with oncologist Saad Usmani noting treatment options have expanded dramatically over the past two decades.
Kelley said multiple myeloma treatments have improved significantly in the past five years, a shift that helps explain why he feels able to keep working while undergoing care. He added that he will share updates about his treatment journey when appropriate.
Leaning on Sobriety Lessons and Bandmates
This isn't the first time Kelley has spoken publicly about a personal health struggle. He started his recovery from alcohol addiction in August 2022, when Lady A postponed their 21-date Request Line Tour, including their scheduled kickoff at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, so he could focus on getting sober, according to the Los Angeles Times. Kelley said sharing his health situation now felt freeing and reduced its power over him, a mindset he has directly linked to lessons from his sobriety journey.

Formed in Nashville in 2006, Lady A has earned five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for its crossover hit “Need You Now,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, per Wikipedia. The trio changed its name from Lady Antebellum to Lady A in June 2020 after acknowledging the original name's association with slavery.
