A man and two Lakeville police officers were hospitalized Saturday afternoon after an officer-involved shooting at a home on Heritage Hill Drive in Lakeville, Plymouth County. Officers were dispatched to the address shortly after 2 p.m. following a report of a disturbed person who may have been under the influence and armed with a gun.
Shots Fired During Police Response to Heritage Hill Drive
According to Boston 25 News, shots were fired during the police response, and the man was taken to a nearby hospital while the two officers were hospitalized for evaluation. Police scanner data reviewed by Nemasket Week shows Lakeville Police Department officers were dispatched to the home shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday. Lakeville officers rendered immediate first aid to the injured civilian at the scene, and he was taken to a hospital. The two officers were hospitalized for medical evaluations, per the same account.
Lakeville has roughly 11,523 residents spread across about 36 square miles, per the U.S. Census Bureau.
No Threat to the Public, Police Say
Police have reported there is no ongoing threat to the public, according to Boston 25 News. Massachusetts State Police detectives are investigating the incident, according to a Plymouth County District Attorney's Office release.
The Lakeville Police Department operates out of its public safety headquarters at 323 Bedford Street under Police Chief Matthew Perkins, who has led the department since before 2023, according to the Southeastern Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association. Whether officers discharged their weapons, the current medical condition of the man taken to the hospital, and what charges, if any, might follow remain open questions pending the state police review.
A Familiar Scene for Lakeville Police Three Years Later
Saturday's shooting comes almost exactly three years after another officer-involved shooting in Lakeville. On September 29, 2023, a Lakeville police officer and an off-duty state trooper shot and wounded an armed suspect on Precinct Street after he brandished a replica handgun and shouted “kill or be killed,” according to CBS News. That earlier case similarly involved a disturbed individual confronting police.
After Lakeville's 2023 incident, the officer was taken off duty, and the officer's and trooper's service weapons were taken as part of the investigation, according to WBZ NewsRadio.
The Lakeville Police Department has recently worked alongside state specialized units on other cases as well. In early September, the department collaborated with the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section to investigate a serious crash on Route 18 that seriously injured a motorcyclist and an SUV driver, illustrating the kind of inter-agency ties now guiding the response to Saturday's shooting.
