A 26-year-old man was shot in the left leg Saturday afternoon while standing on a sidewalk in the 5200 block of North Rockwell Street in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood, according to police. The shooter fled before officers arrived, and the suspect has not been identified.
Victim Rushed to Trauma Center in Fair Condition
The shooting happened at 1:52 p.m. Saturday, according to Chicago Sun-Times, which reported the man was hospitalized in fair condition after being struck while standing on the sidewalk. As reported by CBS News, the victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment. Area Three detectives are investigating the shooting, per Chicago police.
Illinois Masonic operates a designated Level 1 Trauma Center in the Lakeview neighborhood, staffed for 24-hour critical care, and it serves as one of the primary adult trauma destinations on the city's North Side, according to background from the medical center's own project documentation. The victim was taken there for treatment.
Rare Daytime Violence in a Quiet North Side Pocket
The 5200 block of North Rockwell Street falls within Chicago's 20th Police District, known as Lincoln, which is headquartered at 5400 N. Lincoln Ave. and covers Lincoln Square, Andersonville, Edgewater, Uptown, and West Ridge, per the Chicago Police Department.
Saturday's shooting occurred during the afternoon. Community attention toward public safety in the area has already been heightened this year following the fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer just blocks away at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in April, when an ER patient in custody disarmed an officer and critically wounded a second one, according to Police1.
Overnight Shooting in Neighboring Uptown Adds to Weekend Toll
Hours before the Lincoln Square shooting, a 39-year-old man was shot in the right elbow near the Wilson CTA station in neighboring Uptown around 2:15 a.m. the same day, CWB Chicago reported. The two shootings unfolded within the same 24-hour window.
The block has drawn police attention before. In January 2017, officers responding to a person-with-a-gun call forced entry into a Rockwell Street apartment and recovered a sawed-off shotgun and an AK-47-style rifle, with a resident later prosecuted on weapons and machine gun charges, according to CWB Chicago's earlier reporting.
Citywide Shooting Numbers Show Mixed Trend
Chicago's broader gun violence picture this September has been mixed. During Labor Day weekend, 37 people were shot in 30 separate incidents across the city, matching the 2025 holiday homicide total even as total shooting victims fell 36% year-over-year, according to WTTW News. The Lincoln Square shooting adds to a running tally of North Side incidents that police continue to track as the fall season begins.
Separately, the city issued a request for proposals in June to sell and redevelop the former 20th Police District station site at 1940 W. Foster Ave. in Lincoln Square into transit-oriented housing, according to the City of Chicago. That site housed the district station before operations moved to the Lincoln Avenue headquarters.
The suspect was unidentified in the latest reports. If a suspect is identified and charged, Illinois law classifies discharging a firearm and injuring another person as aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony carrying a mandatory prison term of 6 to 30 years without eligibility for probation, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
