A 46-year-old man was walking to his car around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday when a gunman opened fire on the 8400 block of South Euclid Avenue in Chicago's Stoney Island Park neighborhood, striking him six times in the lower body before fleeing on foot. Police say the man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
According to CBS Chicago, an unknown shooter pulled a gun and fired at the man before running from the scene. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, and Chicago police said no further information was immediately available. Area 2 Detectives are now investigating the shooting.
A Block With a Violent History
The 8400 block of South Euclid Avenue has seen extreme gun violence before. In August 2010, two 22-year-old men — both children or siblings of Chicago police officers — were killed and two others were wounded in a drive-by shooting outside a residential gathering on the same block, according to Police1.
Stoney Island Park, near Jesse Owens Park at 87th Street and Stony Island Avenue, has also logged repeated outdoor shootings in recent years. FOX 32 Chicago reported a fatal alley shooting of a 40-year-old man in June 2024 and a January 2025 incident in which two gunmen shot a pedestrian standing on a sidewalk in the same neighborhood.
Geography That Complicates the Investigation
South Euclid Avenue is the location of the reported shooting. Investigators are examining what happened, and the case remains under investigation.

Trauma Center Access May Have Saved His Life
The man's rapid transport to University of Chicago Medical Center may have played a critical role in his survival. A study published in The Trace in March found that after UChicago Medicine reopened its Level 1 adult trauma center in May 2018, South Side shooting victims reached emergency care nearly 10 minutes faster, and reported a 3.9% decrease after the center opened. The center filled what researchers described as a decades-long trauma desert on Chicago's South Side.

Open Questions and Legal Stakes
Investigators have not said whether the man was specifically targeted or what motive, if any, drove the attack, and it remains unclear whether surveillance footage from the nearby Stony Island Avenue commercial corridor will produce leads for Area 2 Detectives. If a suspect is identified and arrested, prosecutors could pursue charges based on the evidence.
The shooting adds to a string of recent violent incidents in the surrounding community.
