Fort Lauderdale police officers conducting a welfare check Tuesday morning found two people dead inside a condo building on South Birch Road, according to officials. The deceased include a man and a woman, and investigators say there are no signs of foul play and no threat to the public.
Officers responded to the condo at 200 South Birch Road around 9:40 a.m., according to NBC 6 South Florida. The causes of death remain under investigation, and detectives have not disclosed what prompted the welfare check or how long the two had been unresponsive before officers arrived.
The building at that address is Leisure Beach Condo, situated three blocks from the ocean along the Intracoastal Waterway, according to a listing from Sotheby's International Realty. The property sits in Fort Lauderdale's Central Beach neighborhood, an area dense with seasonal and year-round multi-family residences.
Welfare Checks and Emergency Aid
Welfare checks are intended to determine whether someone may need immediate aid. The Supreme Court's emergency-aid rule addresses warrantless entry to provide that assistance.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the deaths.
Not the First Fort Lauderdale Welfare Check to End in Tragedy
This isn't the first time a Fort Lauderdale welfare check has turned up multiple deaths this year. In February, officers checking on a Victoria Park home found two people dead inside, a case detectives later tied to a cross-state murder-suicide in Sarasota, according to Local 10.
This spring, Hoodline reported a woman found dead in a Singer Island condo pool, another case where investigators found no initial indication of foul play.
No updated identities, ages, or a cause of death for the two found Tuesday at the Birch Road condo have been released, and the investigation remains open.
