A 28-year-old man was being held Tuesday on an aggravated-battery charge after a woman suffered a severe head injury in an incident involving a moving car in South Miami-Dade, according to WPLG Local 10. The arrest report described the woman as being in a coma and considered brain dead when it was written; the available accounts do not provide a later update on her condition.
The incident was reported Saturday morning near 26601 South Dixie Highway in the Naranja area of unincorporated Miami-Dade. Local 10 reported that deputies found the woman in the roadway and that investigators later located the vehicle and detained Ismel Baro-Rodriguez.
What the arrest report alleges
According to the arrest report cited by Local 10, surveillance footage showed Baro-Rodriguez and the woman arriving together, followed by the woman being seen on the vehicle's trunk. Investigators allege that the vehicle moved and she fell, striking her head on the pavement. The report also says Baro-Rodriguez left the area, was later found at his home and, after being advised of his Miranda rights, admitted involvement.
Those details remain allegations in an arrest report, not findings at trial. Local 10 reported that the woman was taken to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition. Baro-Rodriguez faces aggravated battery causing great bodily harm under Florida Statute 784.045. The statute carries a maximum prison term of 15 years and a fine of up to $10,000.
Local 10 reported that Baro-Rodriguez was booked under case number F26018877 and was being held at the Metrowest Detention Center on the state charge. The report also noted an immigration hold. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says a detainer is a request for notice before release and for a hold of up to 48 hours so federal authorities can assume custody. ICE also says a detainer does not by itself mean deportation; removal requires due process and a lawful order.
