A man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in the West Lake Forest area of New Orleans East, on Tara Lane, where deadly violence has been reported since 2017. New Orleans Police Department officers found a man inside an apartment suffering from trauma, though the cause was unknown.
According to WGNO, the shooting occurred around 2:41 p.m. The station reported that no further information, including the victim's identity or a possible motive, had been released as of publication.
A Street With a Painful History
Thursday's killing is not an isolated event on this block. NOPD Seventh District officers investigated a fatal shooting in the same 6800 block of Tara Lane back on April 8, 2022, when an adult male was found unresponsive in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds, according to NOPD News. The block also carries a darker distinction: it was the site of the October 13, 2017, shooting death of NOPD Officer Marcus McNeil, who was patrolling near Tara Lane, as reported by WWL-TV. The sources reviewed did not detail the suspect's apprehension or the case's outcome.
Violence has also struck the immediately adjacent 6700 block of Tara Lane repeatedly in recent years. On November 30, 2024, two men were shot and killed there, a double homicide. Hoodline covered the violent holiday weekend at the time. More recently, on July 31, 2026, a woman was reportedly wrestled to the ground and robbed of her fanny pack by three suspects, one of whom was reportedly armed with a gun, in the 6700 block of Tara Lane, as Hoodline reported in its coverage of that robbery.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
The Tara Lane pattern stands in contrast to broader trends across New Orleans. NOPD reported Thursday that the city recorded 22 homicides between May and August 2026. Mid-year statistics published by NOPD in July showed citywide violent crime dropped 70% during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2022, with total homicides also declining.
The Seventh District posted a 74% long-term drop in violent crime between 2022 and mid-2026, per the same NOPD data. The district also opened a separate homicide investigation in July after a man was shot in the 4700 block of Laine Avenue in New Orleans East and died at a local hospital, having initially survived long enough for EMS transport.
Prosecutors Warn Against Complacency
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said in August that lower citywide murder totals must not diminish law enforcement focus on non-fatal illegal gunfire incidents in the Seventh District and across the city. His statement accompanied a guilty plea in State v. Lionel Anderson, a Seventh District case, and a separate jury verdict in State v. Esli Fernandez-Flores, underscoring that officials view gun violence broadly, not just homicide counts, as the measure of public safety.
As of Thursday, WGNO's report did not identify a suspect or any murder charges in the case. The report included a tip-line request and identified the victim only as a man.
