A man reported being robbed inside a bathroom at Methodist University Hospital on Union Avenue, according to Memphis police, who are now searching for the suspect responsible. The victim told officers a stranger approached him from behind and held what felt like a gun to his back before demanding his belongings and making off with his cash.

According to WREG, police say the suspect approached the victim from behind inside the hospital bathroom. The suspect reportedly wore a blue mask and a baseball hat and is believed to be about 60 years old. The victim told police the man held what felt like a gun to his back, demanded his items, and took his cash before fleeing.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage from inside the hospital, per the same report, and the video showed a tall male matching the suspect's description entering the bathroom alongside the victim. MPD officers observed the possible suspect exit the bathroom and jog out of camera view shortly afterward.

A Zero-Tolerance Policy Meets a Security Gap

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, which operates the 617-bed Union Avenue campus as the flagship hospital of its network and the main adult private teaching hospital for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has not responded to WREG's request for comment on the incident. The health system's own policy documentation states that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for acts or threats of violence on its premises and conducts ongoing environment-of-care risk assessments, according to Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. Even so, key questions remain about how the suspect allegedly carried out the robbery and slipped past internal campus security before disappearing from camera view.

This is not the first time violence has touched a Methodist Le Bonheur facility. In September 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in the parking lot of Methodist North Hospital, another Memphis facility operated by the same network, as Hoodline previously reported. And in April 2023, an aggravated assault suspect fleeing Memphis police was arrested after arriving at the Union Avenue campus seeking treatment for a gunshot wound, according to localmemphis.com.

Possible Charges Hinge on the Gun Claim

Whether the suspect ultimately faces aggravated or simple robbery charges may come down to whether prosecutors can establish that a weapon was displayed or reasonably implied. Under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-402, robbery committed with a deadly weapon, or by displaying any item that leads a victim to reasonably believe it is a deadly weapon, constitutes aggravated robbery, a Class B felony carrying 8 to 30 years in prison and fines up to $25,000, according to Justia Law. Absent proof of an actual or implied weapon, Tennessee's simple robbery statute, TCA § 39-13-401, applies instead, a Class C felony punishable by 3 to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, per FindLaw.

The robbery comes at a moment when Memphis has otherwise been reporting sustained declines in violent crime. Memphis Police Department statistics show robberies dropped 38% during the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, while overall Part I crimes fell 36% year to date in 2026; year-end 2025 reporting showed a 31% decrease in robberies citywide compared to 2024.
