
A man became trapped inside a seven-foot storm drain at Pleasant Drive Apartments in Martinsville on Tuesday afternoon after entering the drain to clean it. Firefighters arrived within minutes, confirmed his depth and condition, and began setting up a technical rescue operation before anyone went in after him.
The Martinsville Fire Department received the entrapment call just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to WRTV. Rescue unit R142 arrived within minutes of a direct 3:01 p.m. phone call confirming the man was trapped roughly seven feet down, as reported by WTHR. That quick confirmation of the drain's depth let crews immediately call for specialized rescue equipment and medical backup.
Once additional personnel arrived, the fire department prepared for what is known as a confined space entry, per the same account. Before anyone went underground, crews checked air monitors, set up positive pressure ventilation, and rigged a rope system to safely lift the man out. Only after those precautions were in place did a technician enter the drain to reach him.
