Matt Kimbrel, 36, died at a hospital after his motorcycle collided with a dump truck in Huntsville, Alabama, on Saturday morning. The crash occurred near Highway 431 and Cove Commons Drive at about 8 a.m., according to Huntsville police information reported by WAFF.
Police told WAFF that Kimbrel was traveling north on Highway 431 when the truck turned onto Cove Commons Drive. Investigators said he could not stop before the motorcycle slid into the truck. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Huntsville police said they do not anticipate criminal charges in the case, although the investigation continues.
His connection to the Braves
Kimbrel was the younger brother of Craig Kimbrel, a veteran major league reliever. Matt Kimbrel was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2012 and spent three seasons pitching in the organization's minor-league system, WAFF reported.
Craig Kimbrel's professional career included time with the Braves, and he later played for 12 major league organizations, according to Yahoo Sports. The New York Post reported that he signed a minor-league deal with the New York Mets in January, appeared in 14 games before being designated for assignment in May, and later joined the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 9.
