A 26-year-old Miami Beach man was arrested Saturday after his roommate of about six years told police he pointed a gun at him and opened fire as he drove away, striking the rear window of his car several times. Ricardo Miguel Valdivia now faces charges of attempted murder and cannabis possession, and a judge has ordered him held without bond.
According to NBC 6 South Florida, Miami-Dade jail records confirm the arrest and charges. The roommate told investigators Valdivia had been acting erratically since Thursday, making odd statements including, “I told you that you can't leave, they are out there looking for us.”
A Night That Turned Violent on Bonita Drive
Police say the roommate had picked Valdivia up from work, and the pair returned to their apartment on Bonita Drive. The roommate later left, then returned to drive Valdivia to a hospital. During that return visit, he told officers, he saw Valdivia exit the apartment with a gun in his pocket.
The roommate said Valdivia then pulled out the gun and pointed it at him before opening fire multiple times as he drove away, according to the arrest report cited by the station. The gunfire struck the rear window of his vehicle several times, the report states.
Officer Flagged Down, Suspect Found With Two Guns
The roommate flagged down an officer shortly after the shooting, and responding officers found Valdivia back at the apartment. Police said he had one gun in his pocket, another gun in a bookbag, and a bag of cannabis, according to the same report.
Valdivia was booked into jail on the attempted murder and cannabis possession charges. He appeared before a judge Monday, who ordered him held without bond and directed him to stay away from his roommate going forward.
How Miami-Area Courts Handle Felony Cases
The Miami-Dade Clerk of the Courts describes Circuit Criminal and says felony bond hearings are held virtually Monday through Friday at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; weekend and holiday hearings are held once a day in a courtroom.
In July, a 17-year-old was shot and killed by a deputy in Miami Beach after allegedly displaying a weapon while a warrant was being served, according to CBS News Miami. Separately, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said it investigated a shooting in April that left three people injured.
