A 10-year-old girl died and her 15-year-old brother was critically injured after a driver struck them while they rode an e-bike through a Northwest Miami-Dade intersection on September 9, then drove off without stopping. Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detectives say the driver, identified as Arick Metayer, has now surrendered and faces three felony charges in connection with the crash.
According to CBS News, the crash occurred at 8:53 p.m. near the intersection of Northwest 117th Street and Northwest 7th Avenue, though a separate account from tampafp.com places deputies responding to the scene around 8:40 p.m. that same evening. Investigators say Metayer was driving a silver 2012 Nissan Versa northbound on Northwest 7th Avenue when he turned onto Northwest 117th Street and struck the two children as they crossed the intersection on an electric motorcycle. Both siblings, 10-year-old Peyton and 15-year-old Brent, were ejected from the e-bike in the collision.
Critical Injuries, Then a Death the Next Morning
Paramedics rushed both children to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. Peyton died the following morning, on September 10, according to the arrest report cited by CBS News. Brent underwent emergency surgery and has continued to recover, per tampafp.com's earlier reporting, though the outlet did not provide further detail on his current condition.
Metayer left the scene without rendering aid, providing identifying information, or notifying law enforcement, investigators said. Surveillance video reviewed by detectives reportedly showed him stopping nearby afterward, inspecting passenger-side damage on his vehicle, and then driving away. In the immediate aftermath, investigators had publicly appealed for help locating a silver or gray 2009-2012 Nissan Versa believed to be connected to the crash, tampafp.com reported.
Vehicle Parts, Phone Records and a Trip to a Salvage Yard
Detectives say they ultimately linked Metayer's Nissan Versa to the crash through vehicle parts recovered at the scene. His phone records, per the arrest report, placed him at a salvage yard in Davie the day after the crash. Investigators also say Metayer boarded a Brightline train from Miami to Orlando within roughly 24 hours of the collision.
The arrest report also describes a witness who said Metayer admitted he had been involved in a crash. According to that account, the witness told Metayer, “People are talking about you. That little girl died that you hit.” Metayer allegedly responded, “I know. I'm going to hire an attorney.”
Surrender and Pending Charges
Albert Quirantes arranged Metayer's surrender at Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office headquarters, according to the arrest report. Metayer now faces three felony charges: leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and tampering with physical evidence. He is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and is awaiting a trial scheduled for Tuesday, per the arrest report.
