Nine people were injured Saturday when a car and a van collided at the intersection of Southwest 87th Avenue and 24th Street in West Miami-Dade, sending victims to the hospital and forcing the roadway to shut down during the emergency response.
According to WSVN 7News, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue treated some of the injured at the scene, while others were transported to area hospitals. The station reported that the intersection reopened after the wrecked vehicles were towed.
Intersection Closed During Response
Southwest 87th Avenue and 24th Street remained shut down while first responders managed the scene, per the same report. The roadway reopened only after the damaged vehicles were towed away, allowing traffic to resume moving through the corridor.
Details on the exact number of victims transported, their conditions, and how the collision unfolded have not been released. It also remains unclear which driver, if either, was determined to be at fault in the crash.
Part of a Pattern of Multi-Vehicle Crashes
The collision adds to a string of serious multi-vehicle crashes reported across Miami-Dade County this year. In August, NBC 6 South Florida reported that a driver struck three vehicles and fled the scene, leaving three people hurt. Later that month, Local10 reported that a work van, an SUV, and a sedan crashed at the intersection of Northwest 17th Avenue and 103rd Street, injuring several people.
In May, a crash in Southwest Miami-Dade sent a vehicle careening into a home, according to CBS News Miami, which reported that three people were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from stable to critical. That crash left the home's structure unlivable and displaced the family living there.
