One person was seriously injured Saturday evening after gunfire erupted in a parking lot wedged between a vape shop and gas station on Jefferson Street in North Nashville, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. Officers responded to the 1800 block of Jefferson Street around 6:15 p.m. after reports of a shooting, and the wounded victim was transported to an area hospital.
According to WSMV, the shooting took place in the parking lot separating the two businesses, and MNPD said the investigation remains ongoing. No other details, including a suspect description or possible motive, have been released at this time. The Shisha.com listing identifies the business as Z Mart #7.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
Saturday's shooting is far from the first burst of gun violence to hit this stretch of Jefferson Street. In October 2023, Metro Nashville Police Department detectives investigated a late-night shooting near Jefferson Street and 26th Avenue North that left two men with non-critical gunshot wounds, according to the department's own account posted at the time.
A year later, the corridor saw something far worse. A massive shootout at Jefferson Street and 27th Avenue North in October 2024 left a 24-year-old man dead and nine others injured amid an exchange of gunfire between rival gang factions, as Hoodline reported at the time. Four suspects were eventually arrested and charged with criminal homicide and gun offenses in that case. Just days before this weekend's shooting, a man in his 60s was shot on nearby 18th Avenue North, an incident Hoodline also covered as police searched for a maroon SUV.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
The violence along Jefferson Street stands in contrast to broader trends across Nashville. Metro Nashville recorded 74 homicides in 2025, a 27.5% drop from the prior year and the city's lowest annual total since 2014, while there were 35% fewer gunshot victims citywide, according to District Attorney General Glenn R. Funk. That decline followed five consecutive years of triple-digit homicides in the city.
City leaders reported that overall crime dropped another 20% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period the year before. WBIR Channel 10 also reported that public sentiment surveys showed residents still voicing safety concerns.
Corridor Study Aims at Safety Upgrades
The shooting also lands inside an active planning zone. Metro Nashville launched the Jefferson Street Corridor Study in 2026 as part of its “Choose How You Move” initiative, aiming to upgrade pedestrian crosswalks, traffic signals, and overall corridor safety across a stretch serving roughly 26,000 residents, according to Engage Nashville. Jefferson Street carries deep historical weight for the neighborhood. It once served as the primary commercial and cultural epicenter for North Nashville's Black community before Interstate 40 construction physically divided the area in the 1960s, according to the Civic Design Center. Local groups have since worked to revitalize commercial property along the corridor while preserving its cultural heritage.
Hoodline reported that a victim in the 2024 Jefferson Street shooting was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. MNPD said its investigation into Saturday's shooting is ongoing, and no arrests have been announced.
