New York City starts Sunday with light rain, fog and temperatures near 58 degrees, but the bigger concern is what comes next: strong winds, rain showers and flooding along vulnerable waterfront areas. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. Sunday, while a Wind Advisory runs through noon.
The National Weather Service says N-NE winds of 17 to 29 mph could gust to 40 or 45 mph, with tree limbs, unsecured objects and a few power outages possible. The latest warning sharpens the threat outlined in Saturday's Hoodline forecast, especially for waterfront neighborhoods and low-lying roads.
Waterfront Areas Face Flooding Through Sunday Evening
Vulnerable parts of Manhattan and Staten Island could see two to three feet of water above ground level near the shoreline, according to the National Weather Service. Flooding may reach roads, parking lots, parks, basements and properties near tidal rivers and bays, with numerous road closures possible.
Drivers should not go around barricades or travel through water of unknown depth. The city is also facing widespread minor flooding in poor-drainage and urban areas, while isolated flash flooding remains possible as rain bands move through.
Rain Lingers Into Sunday Night
Rain showers are expected much of Sunday, with a high near 68 degrees and temperatures slipping into the mid-60s during the afternoon. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible late Sunday into the evening, with more showers and thunderstorms possible Sunday night.
Ocean beaches will remain dangerous, with surf potentially reaching 8 to 11 feet, a high risk of rip currents and additional beach erosion around high tide. Sunday is not a good day for swimming, shoreline walks or casually testing whether that flooded street is “probably fine.”
