A 32-year-old man showed up at a residence on Mandarin Drive in Oak Grove just before 5 a.m. Sunday, telling the occupants inside that he had been shot and assaulted. He was suffering from at least one gunshot wound and a head injury, and he was later airlifted across state lines to a Nashville trauma center in serious but stable condition.
The man walked up to the residence and knocked on the door after the shooting, according to Christian County Now. A Hopkinsville Fire/EMS spokesperson told the outlet that the man reported being both shot and assaulted before first responders arrived and confirmed the gunshot wound and head injury. He was then flown by helicopter to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville for treatment, the outlet reported.
Earlier Mandarin Drive Shootings
The shooting happened at an apartment building on Mandarin Drive in Oak Grove. In March 2022, 18-year-old Makhai Loving was fatally shot in a parking lot at 102 Mandarin Drive; no arrests had been made when WHOP reported on the killing, according to WHOP Radio.
The street has also been the site of a robbery-turned-homicide. In December 2020, 20-year-old Justin Tyler Sawyer was shot twice inside his vehicle after pulling into the Newton Place Apartments at 100 Mandarin Drive, a case in which three men were arrested in early 2021 on charges of robbery, kidnapping, assault, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence, per ClarksvilleNow.com.
More recent reports mentioned gunfire and a wanton-endangerment charge.
Airlifted to a Regional Trauma Hub
The decision to airlift the victim reflects the severity of his injuries and the region's medical geography. TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville is a state-designated Level I Trauma Center and regional burn hub built to receive high-acuity patients from across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, according to TriStar Health.
Potential Charges and a County in Transition
Investigators have not said whether the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, a home invasion, or an outside confrontation. If the case eventually produces charges, the charges would depend on the facts established by investigators.
The shooting also lands amid a period of upheaval for Christian County law enforcement. Neighboring Hopkinsville, the county seat, recorded zero homicides in 2025, underscoring how unusual violent gun incidents remain for the broader county even as Mandarin Drive continues to see repeat police calls. That city is also facing a leadership shakeup, with both its police chief and deputy chief announcing resignations effective October 11, a transition Hoodline detailed in its report on the Hopkinsville chief rift. Oak Grove police have not released additional details on a suspect or motive in Sunday's shooting.
