Oklahoma City is starting Tuesday under clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s, but the calm morning will give way to another dangerous afternoon. The high is expected to reach 101 degrees, with heat-index values climbing into the triple digits.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service says heat-index values could reach 108 degrees in parts of the advisory area, while south winds up to 10 mph offer little relief.
Another Triple-Digit Day Wednesday
The heatwave hangs on Wednesday, when Oklahoma City was forecast to reach about 101 degrees, though afternoon storms and cloud cover were possible. South-southwest winds near 10 mph are expected, and the heat index could again reach about 105 degrees.
Tuesday night will stay unusually warm, with a low around 78. That leaves residents with limited overnight recovery before the next round of afternoon heat.
Storms Bring A Brief Cooldown Thursday
Showers and thunderstorms were expected to begin Wednesday afternoon and spread southward overnight, with a 60% overnight precipitation chance in Oklahoma City. Thursday brings a much-needed shift, with storms lingering into the day and a 50 percent probability of a high below 90.
That break from the furnace may be brief. Temperatures are expected to reach near 97 degrees Friday, 98 Saturday and 96 Sunday, with at least a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms lingering through the weekend.
Heat Safety Remains Important
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, spend time in air conditioning when possible, avoid prolonged direct sun and check on older adults, children, neighbors and pets. Outdoor work and exercise will be safest early in the morning or later in the evening, especially Tuesday and Wednesday.
The latest advisory and the midweek storm pattern mark a substantive change from Hoodline's previous forecast update, which focused primarily on the extended Labor Day heat.
