Temperatures are expected to climb to about 99 degrees, with heat-index values reaching as high as 109. The city’s stubborn hot streak is showing no interest in taking the weekend off.
Heat Advisory Covers Friday Afternoon
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday across Oklahoma City and much of central Oklahoma, according to the National Weather Service. South-southeast winds will run around 8 to 12 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, but the breeze will not do much to erase the heat. Officials advise drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning when possible, avoiding direct sun and checking on relatives and neighbors.
Friday’s advisory is the latest turn in a heat wave Hoodline has been tracking across the metro, with a new advisory now covering the most dangerous afternoon hours. Outdoor work, exercise and errands will be safest early in the morning or later in the evening, although Friday night will remain warm with a low around 77.
Triple-Digit Heat Stretches Through Labor Day
Saturday is forecast to reach 100 degrees under sunny skies, followed by a high near 99 Sunday and another 100-degree afternoon on Labor Day. Overnight lows will stay in the upper 70s, offering limited relief after sunset. Rain chances remain close to zero through Friday, rising slightly over the weekend and early next week.
The extended forecast calls for a high near 99 degrees Tuesday as well. A previous Hoodline forecast already warned of a hot Labor Day stretch, and the latest outlook shows the heat holding on well beyond the holiday.
Dry Weather Keeps Fire Concerns Alive
The National Weather Service says drought and very dry fuels remain a concern even as overnight moisture improves somewhat. With little rain in sight, residents should use extra care around dry grass, brush and anything that could create a spark.
