Stadium security successfully protected game officials and the visiting Oregon team as fans flooded the field, and that safe outcome could factor into the conference's decision on a fine.
The Big 12 had not announced whether a fine would be issued. Big 12 policy allows fines to be waived specifically when host security can demonstrate that it protected visiting personnel during a field rush, and OSU officials reported 42 heat-related calls for help during the game, on top of the three fans treated for ankle injuries after storming the field.
An Upset 21 Games in the Making
The celebration was a long time coming for Cowboys fans. Oklahoma State entered the matchup having lost 21 consecutive games against FBS opponents and came in as 23.5-point underdogs against Oregon, according to Sports Illustrated. The Cowboys carried a 12-game overall losing streak into the game, and their win snapped that streak.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker powered the upset, throwing for 317 yards and rushing for 109 more while accounting for three total touchdowns, including a 10-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter that sealed the lead, according to official Big 12 game statistics. The win came in front of an announced crowd of 51,035 at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Goalpost Torn Down, Marched to Theta Pond
Once the final whistle blew, fans tore down the stadium's west goalpost and carried it roughly a quarter-mile across campus before dunking it in Theta Pond, the same report from Sports Illustrated detailed.

The scene stood in sharp contrast to Stillwater's last major field-storming disaster. When Oklahoma State fans rushed the field during a 2011 celebration, 13 fans were injured, according to a CBS News report from that time. One person fell 15 feet and suffered leg fractures during that celebration, and the overall number of leg injuries this year was down from those previous years, per KFOR's report on OSU officials' findings.
This time, medical personnel treated three minor ankle injuries tied to the field rush, alongside the wave of heat exhaustion cases tied to the high kickoff temperature. The postgame celebration resulted in far fewer severe medical incidents than that past Stillwater celebration, even with the added strain of the heat.
How the Big 12's Fine Waiver Works
The Big 12's standard field-storming fine sits at $50,000, a figure dwarfed by the Southeastern Conference's flat $500,000 field-access penalty per incident adopted in 2025 rather than an escalating penalty for repeated infractions, per a report from EssentiallySports. The Big 12's rules instead focus on whether host security can escort officials and opposing players off the field safely, rewarding effective game management rather than issuing blanket punishment.
OSU is not the first Big 12 school to catch this break. The conference previously waived a $50,000 field-storming fine for the University of Colorado during the 2025 season after that school's security also succeeded in protecting the visiting team, Sports Illustrated noted.
