An adult man was rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound early Sunday after Richmond officers responded to a shooting in the 1500 block of Jennie Scher Road at approximately 12:55 a.m. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and no suspect information has been released.
According to WTVR CBS 6 News, officers found the adult male with an apparent gunshot wound after responding to the call overnight. Police have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000, noting that tips can also be submitted anonymously through the P3 Tips Crime Stoppers app available for smartphones. WTVR says it will provide updates as the story develops, and no arrests had been announced as of publication.
A Block That's Seen This Before
The stretch of Jennie Scher Road where Sunday's shooting happened sits within Sector 111 of the Richmond Police Department's First Precinct, which covers East End communities, according to the Richmond Police Department. The block includes the Ashley Oaks Apartments, a sprawling residential community of more than 240 units operating under federal Section 8 and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit programs, per Redfin.
This is not the first time gunfire has been reported in this corridor. In May 2022, a report of random gunfire was followed by the discovery of a male victim who was dead, according to available reports.
Citywide Crime Trends Point Downward
Sunday's shooting comes even as Richmond's overall violent crime numbers have been falling. Police data presented in January showed major crime across the city dropped 12% during 2025 to 9,037 reported incidents, with Police Chief Rick Edwards noting the total fell below the city's 10-year average of 9,700 major crimes, according to WRIC.
The trend continued into this year. First-quarter figures for 2026 showed homicides dropping from 15 in the first quarter of 2025 to 7 in the same period this year, while non-fatal shootings fell from 39 to 33, per The Richmonder.
Potential Charges if a Suspect Is Identified
Should investigators identify and charge a suspect, Virginia law provides for penalties for shootings like Sunday's. Potential charges could include malicious wounding or unlawful wounding.
Additional firearm-related charges or penalties could also apply if a firearm was used during a felony.
New Precinct Building Serves the Area
The area around Jennie Scher Road is now served by a newly built First Precinct headquarters. In April, Richmond completed a 22,892-square-foot facility on Fairfield Way meant to improve public safety infrastructure and emergency response across East End neighborhoods, according to Shockey Builds, replacing an outdated precinct building.
No suspect or motive has been identified in Sunday's shooting, and the investigation remains open. Richmond Police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward through Crime Stoppers, either by phone or through the anonymous P3 Tips app.
