Palm Beach County plans to install protected left-turn signals at Military Trail’s intersections with University Boulevard and Fredrick Small Road. The county says the signals should be operational within three to four weeks; both intersections are county-owned and operated, according to WPTV.
The county is moving ahead even though the intersections did not reach the usual benchmark of five left-turn-related crashes in a 12-month period, WPTV reported. The station said obstructed sightlines make the existing yield-on-green left turns a safety concern. Susan Tinsley had urged residents to contact county officials, and a social-media post drew dozens of comments from Jupiter residents describing near-misses and other complaints, according to the same report.
The decision comes as Palm Beach County works through its Safe Streets for All action plan, adopted in May to identify and improve dangerous roads, according to the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners.
The planned protected arrows are distinct from the flashing-yellow-arrow signals the county began installing in 2019. That earlier project covered eight intersections on Congress Avenue between Golf Road and Gateway Boulevard, according to WFLX. A flashing yellow arrow permits a left turn only after drivers yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and determine it is safe to proceed, as the Village of Wellington explains.
