A man is dead after being struck by a car near Grand Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix Tuesday night, according to the Phoenix Police Department. Officers responded to reports of the crash around 8 p.m., and the road was shut down in both directions as investigators worked the scene.
Phoenix Fire Department first responders transported the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to AZ Family. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene of the crash, and detectives have since taken over the investigation. A Familiar Stretch of Road
Grand Avenue and Indian School Road sits along a corridor that has seen deadly crashes before. Back in April, a woman was killed in a pedestrian crash around 9 p.m. on a Tuesday near 16th Street and Indian School Road in central Phoenix, the outlet's report notes, and she later died at the hospital after being struck by a car.
Phoenix's Pedestrian Safety Problem
The recurring tragedies point to a broader challenge facing the city. Phoenix is ranked fourth worst in the country for pedestrian fatalities, and Arizona pedestrians are nearly twice as likely to be killed in a traffic collision as pedestrians nationally, according to researcher Rob Bhatt, cited in the same report. Statewide, traffic fatalities have declined for a third consecutive year, and fewer pedestrians and bicyclists were killed in 2025 than in 2024, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
In response to the ongoing danger, Phoenix is spending $5.6 million to build 10 new pedestrian-activated crosswalks in high-traffic areas, the same report states. The city has also studied its road network through a Pedestrian Risk Network study meant to identify locations that may carry a greater risk of severe injury for pedestrians and cyclists, according to the City of Phoenix.
