A fistfight outside a Pompano Beach gas station ended with a man shot who ran from the scene and stumbled into a parking lot across the street Tuesday afternoon, all of it captured on surveillance video. Broward Sheriff's Office deputies detained someone at the scene near East Atlantic Boulevard and Northeast First Avenue, but investigators have not said whether that person has been formally connected to the shooting.
The footage, obtained by CBS News Miami, shows the male victim getting into a physical fight with a female passenger riding in an SUV marked with a baby-on-board sticker. According to CBS News Miami, the man then walked into the gas station to buy a cigarette, and as he was walking away afterward, the SUV's driver shot him. He ran from the scene and stumbled into a parking lot on the other side of the street from the station.
The shooting was reported to Broward County Regional Communications shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a joint response from Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, according to the Boca Post. Deputies and fire rescue crews arrived to find an adult man who had been shot, and paramedics transported him to an area hospital. His condition has not been released.
A Food Truck Worker Takes Cover
Sunny Miller, an employee at the 3 Little Charlies food truck parked in the gas station lot, told the station he heard gunshots and sheltered inside the vehicle until deputies arrived. The account offers a rare on-the-ground perspective from someone who was working feet away when the confrontation escalated. The food truck was operating at the station at the time of the shooting.
BSO's Violent Crimes Unit detectives and Crime Scene Unit members responded to investigate, and the case remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not identified the detained individual, have not said how that person is connected to the shooting, and have not clarified the exact circumstances that led up to it. No additional details were immediately available.
Nearby Trauma Care and a Familiar Pattern
Critical trauma patients injured in Pompano Beach are routinely transported to Broward Health North in neighboring Deerfield Beach, an adult Level II trauma facility with a 36,000-square-foot emergency department and three dedicated trauma bays, according to Broward Health. It is a trauma facility for critical injuries in the area, though it has not been confirmed where Tuesday's victim was taken.
This is not the first violent incident at a Pompano Beach gas station this year. Hoodline previously reported that a man was hospitalized after a shooting at a Marathon station on South Dixie Highway on August 21, with BSO detaining a potential suspect there as well.

Should the detained individual face charges, Florida's 10-20-Life law, codified in Statute 775.087, mandates a minimum 20-year prison sentence for discharging a firearm during a forcible felony, rising to 25 years to life if the shooting causes great bodily harm.
