West Riviera Elementary Principal Alicia Taylor addressed the incident by asking parents to take a more active role in monitoring what their kids bring to school. She said families should regularly check their children's backpacks and make sure weapons and other prohibited items are stored safely and securely at home, per the same account. Taylor also praised the people who spoke up and informed a trusted adult about the handgun, crediting that step with helping resolve the situation without anyone getting hurt.
Taylor pointed families toward the FortifyFL app as another tool for keeping campuses safe, noting it supports anonymous reporting of safety concerns. The app allows students, parents, or staff to flag potential threats without having to identify themselves, according to the CBS12 report.
Part Of A Recurring Problem At Florida Elementary Schools
The West Riviera case echoes a similar incident from Panther Run Elementary School near Wellington, at 10775 Lake Worth Road, according to NBC Miami. In that case, the student reported discovering the dangerous item in their backpack to a trusted adult, and school police recovered the loaded gun without disrupting the school day; the child did not display or use the weapon in a threatening manner. That student was subject to consequences under the district's Student Code of Conduct, NBC Miami reported.
The Panther Run incident, which the South Florida Sun Sentinel placed in Lake Worth Beach, happened in May 2025, approximately 16 months before the West Riviera discovery. Other Florida cases this year have ended differently for the adults involved: in January, a father was charged after a loaded gun was found in his 5-year-old's backpack at a Cape Coral school, according to CBS12, and a separate report from Gulf Coast News Now identified a father arrested after a loaded gun was found in his 5-year-old child's backpack at Trafalgar Elementary School. A 2023 case reported by Action News Jax also involved a loaded gun found in a backpack on a student's wheelchair at Mandarin Oaks Elementary School.
No arrests, charges, or final disciplinary outcomes have been disclosed in the West Riviera Elementary case, and police have not released the student's age, grade, or how the weapon came to be in the backpack. For now, the school is leaning on its principal's message: check the backpack, secure the weapon, and speak up if something seems wrong.
