A 20-year-old woman was stabbed while riding a CTA bus in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood Wednesday evening, suffering lacerations before being rushed to a hospital in fair condition. Police say the attack followed an argument with another woman on board, and a suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
The stabbing happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 0-100 block of West 95th Street, according to FOX 32 Chicago, which reported the incident citing information from the Chicago Police Department. Police told the outlet the two women got into an argument while riding the bus, and the other woman pulled out a sharp object and struck the victim.
The 20-year-old suffered lacerations to her body and was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition. What sparked the confrontation remains unclear, the station's report notes, and charges against the suspect were still pending as of the report.
Not the First Recent Attack on CTA Property
Wednesday's stabbing follows a similar attack in January, when a man and woman were stabbed during a fight with an attacker on the platform of the CTA's 69th Street Red Line station, according to CBS News Chicago. In that incident, a 37-year-old woman suffered a puncture wound to the right side of her chest, while a 24-year-old man was found with a puncture wound to his upper back, per the same report. Both were taken to the emergency room at the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.
No arrests had been made in that Red Line case, with Area One detectives handling the investigation, according to a separate FOX 32 Chicago report on the platform attack.
Federal Pressure Looms Over CTA Safety
The January stabbing came amid federal scrutiny of the transit agency's security measures. Federal officials ordered the CTA to submit a stronger safety plan or risk losing as much as $50 million in federal funding, CBS News Chicago reported, with the agency given until mid-March to respond. It is not established in available reporting how the CTA responded beyond that deadline.
Wednesday's Roseland stabbing adds another entry to a string of violent incidents connected to CTA buses and stations on Chicago's South Side this year. Investigators have not disclosed what led to the argument that preceded the attack, and the case remains under investigation.
