A 3-year-old Palm Beach County girl named Lennox was found unconscious and floating in a pool during a family gathering on Easter Sunday, setting off a terrifying scramble that ended with her spending weeks hospitalized in critical condition. Months later, that same little girl stood poolside again — this time graduating from swim lessons, able to save herself in the water.
According to WPTV, Lennox's mother, Chrissy, performed CPR on her daughter using training she'd received in the past, working to revive the toddler in the chaotic moments after she was pulled from the water. Chrissy described the scene as horrifying. “There was water coming out of her ears, nose, mouth,” she said, per the station's report. “It was awful.”
Cristel Calderon, who helped save Lennox's life that day, told the station the family had no idea whether the girl would pull through. “We didn't know if she was going to make it,” Calderon said. The uncertainty stretched on for weeks as Lennox remained hospitalized in critical condition, the outlet reported.
From Hospital Bed to Swim School Graduate
Lennox eventually recovered and enrolled in swimming lessons at Infant Swimming Resource Swim School in Royal Palm Beach, the same report notes. She graduated from the program and, according to her family, now loves to swim — and can save herself in a pool if she ever finds herself in trouble in the water again.
Chrissy called her daughter's progress nothing short of a miracle. “She is my miracle. She really is,” she said, per the station's account. “Today means so much to us because now when she gets into the pool she can save herself.”
Calderon, who witnessed Lennox's graduation, said being present for the milestone carried its own weight given what the family had been through. “To be invited to something like a swim lesson graduation is incredible,” she said, according to the same report.
A Certified Instructor and a Broader Push for Swim Safety
The swim school's instructor, Toni Ann Capanelli, is a certified Infant Swimming Resource instructor, according to her own bio posted on Swim Baby Float. Capanelli has taught other young Florida children who later used those lessons in real emergencies — including a 2-year-old boy named Kyle, who local21news.com reported saved himself from nearly drowning in his family's pool after floating to the surface, rolling onto his back and swimming to the edge, fully clothed, using skills from his swim lessons.
Lennox's family hopes their story pushes other parents to act, according to WPTV, encouraging them to enroll their own children in swimming lessons and to learn CPR themselves. The station's report also states that 119 Florida children died as a result of drowning last year.
