A 27-year-old South Plainfield woman died Saturday evening after her Honda motorcycle struck the front driver's side of a Subaru Outback turning left, in a crash that has reopened questions about how often Middlesex County drivers fail to yield to oncoming riders. Sierra Grey was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Ledden Terrace and Clinton Avenue, according to authorities.
NJ.com described the crash as occurring Saturday evening at approximately 7:20 p.m., according to a joint statement from Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and South Plainfield Police Chief Peter J. Papa cited by RLS Media. Grey was riding a Honda SBR1000 motorcycle when it struck the front driver's side of a Subaru Outback driven by a 76-year-old South Plainfield man, per the outlet's report. The car had been turning left from Clinton Avenue onto Ledden Terrace at the time of impact, according to the prosecutor's office, as reported by NJ.com. The Subaru driver was not injured, and the crash remains under investigation.
A Legal Standard Turning Drivers Must Meet
Under New Jersey statute N.J.S.A. 39:4-90, drivers turning left at an intersection must yield the right-of-way to any oncoming vehicle close enough to constitute an immediate hazard, according to FindLaw. That statute places the primary obligation on turning drivers to confirm oncoming lanes are clear before proceeding. The intersection is in a residential neighborhood.
Left-turning vehicles crossing into oncoming traffic account for 42% to 46% of all fatal two-vehicle motorcycle collisions nationwide, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash data cited by the Maguire Law Firm. Left-turn collisions are the most common fatal two-vehicle configuration for riders nationally, and the firm notes that misjudgment and failure to see motorcycles contribute.
A Pattern Repeating Across Middlesex County
Saturday evening's crash is the latest in a string of similar collisions across the region in recent weeks. On Labor Day, September 7, a 31-year-old Metuchen motorcyclist was critically injured in nearby Edison when a driver turned left across oncoming traffic outside Menlo Park Mall, and the rider was thrown more than 35 feet after impact, as Hoodline previously reported. In August, a 29-year-old Somerset motorcyclist was killed in neighboring Bridgewater after a pickup truck turned left directly into his path at Finderne Avenue and East Main Street, and the roadway was closed for several hours, Hoodline also reported.
Central Jersey was designated a regional traffic fatality hotspot earlier this year by New Jersey State Police after Middlesex and Monmouth counties recorded 21 fatal crashes during a period when statewide fatal crashes surged 28%, according to NJ Spotlight News. Middlesex County has also experienced traffic fatalities.
