Downtown Springfield's historic square shuts down five streets Friday evening for the latest installment of 1st Fridays, the city's free monthly market that runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at 501 S. Main Street. This month's lineup includes live music from The Bicho Brothers, a specialty vehicle cruise-in, a kids' zone, food trucks and dozens of local vendors set up around the Robertson County Courthouse.
The event is presented by the City of Springfield, according to a City of Springfield, TN - Government Facebook post, with TriStar NorthCrest Medical Center serving as this month's event sponsor and Chick-fil-A sponsoring the kids' zone. Cannon Kirk Ford is sponsoring the music portion of the evening, and the post describes 1st Fridays as a free, family- and pet-friendly gathering held on the first Friday of each month from May through October.
Road closures will affect 5th Avenue West, Locust Street, 6th Avenue West, South Main Street and 7th Avenue for the duration of the event, per the same city post. Anyone heading downtown Friday evening should plan an alternate route around the courthouse block.
Shopping, Dining and Discovery Booths Line the Square
Shoppers can browse vendors including Front Page Treats, Ember Stone Candle Co., LooHoo's Loop Lounge, Southern Palm and Forever Fancy Permanent Jewelry, among dozens of other makers and boutiques listed in the event materials. On the food side, dining vendors include JKMA Pineapples, Deja Moo, Socks Tacos, The Fresh Squeeze and Athena Greek Cafe, plus a run of dine-in and to-go local eateries around the square.
The market's Discover section brings out community and civic groups, including the Robertson County Players, Maria Latham Photography, the Open Door Pregnancy Resource Center and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The City of Springfield Gas Department is also staffing a booth near the courthouse steps, offering information on damage prevention along with a survey and prizes, according to the seed facts tied to the city's event listing.
Gas Department Booth Ties Into State Digging Law
The gas department's outreach connects to a real legal requirement: under the Tennessee Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act, codified at Tenn. Code Ann. § 65-31-101, anyone planning to excavate must notify Tennessee 811 at least three business days beforehand, according to TN.gov. Skipping that call can lead to civil penalties and, more urgently, hazardous gas leaks — the kind of risk the booth's presence at a downtown festival is meant to head off.
This month's headline act, The Bicho Brothers, is a Middle Tennessee-based cover band that blends classic rock staples with Latin percussion and performs a dedicated Santana tribute set called “Soul Sacrifice,” according to The Bicho Brothers. The group regularly plays municipal concert series and festivals across Tennessee and Kentucky, giving Friday's crowd a taste of the same act that has become a staple on the regional festival circuit.
A Growing Reputation for the Historic Square
1st Fridays was founded in 2017 and has grown into something bigger than a neighborhood pop-up. In March, lifestyle publication StyleBlueprint named it one of the best food, music and cultural festivals in the South, noting that vendor proceeds help fund downtown beautification projects like public art, park improvements and holiday decorations.
The market has also become a proving ground for small businesses. Dirty-soda shop Bake n' Soda used its following from 1st Fridays events to move from a food truck into a permanent storefront on the square earlier this year, an example of how the monthly market can feed directly into downtown commercial real estate.
The courthouse anchoring the event is itself a piece of local history. Built in 1879 and expanded in 1929 with its clock tower, the red-brick Victorian building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, according to the National Park Service. It underwent a major restoration completed in December 2024 that added more than 4,600 square feet of copper standing-seam roofing and 1,285 copper shingles beneath the clock tower, fixing long-standing water leaks while preserving the building's 19th-century character, per Smokey Barn News.
Part of a Busy Civic Calendar
1st Fridays sits alongside a broader roster of city-run events, including Freedom Fest, the Garner Street Grind skate park, Art in the Park and the Springfield Christmas Parade, according to the City of Springfield. Springfield, the seat of Robertson County, had an estimated population of 19,255 in 2024 and sits roughly 30 miles north of Nashville, per U.S. Census Bureau data.
Event sponsor TriStar NorthCrest Medical Center is a 109-bed acute care hospital that traces its roots to 1956, when it opened as Jesse Holman Jones Hospital before being renamed NorthCrest in 1995. HCA Healthcare's TriStar network acquired the facility in September 2021, leading to more than $13 million in capital investments, according to Smokey Barn News.
