More than 100 four-year colleges and universities are heading to Sugar Grove next month, and Waubonsee Community College is picking up the tab on transportation to get local families there. The school's annual College Night runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, inside the Field House on its Sugar Grove Campus, giving students a rare shot at browsing dozens of admissions tables without leaving Kane County.
The event is free and open to the public, connecting local students and families directly with representatives from more than 100 four-year colleges and universities nationally, according to Waubonsee Community College. Per a news release detailed by Shaw Local, the schools on hand will represent colleges and universities from across the country, including Iowa State University, the United States Naval Academy, Ball State University, the University of Florida and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Illinois options will also be well represented. Shaw Local reports that University of Illinois campuses in Chicago, Springfield and Urbana-Champaign are slated to attend, alongside Wheaton College, Bowling Green State University, the University of South Alabama and University of Wisconsin campuses in La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Stevens Point and Whitewater.
Workshops Tackle Majors, Money and Fit
Beyond the admissions tables, the night is built around helping families sort through the harder questions of the college search. Popular breakout workshops on choosing a major, financial aid, and helpful advice for choosing a college will be available, per the same Waubonsee announcement. Shaw Local's reporting adds that the breakout sessions are also designed to guide families through finding the right college fit.
That kind of hands-on prep echoes what Waubonsee already offers year-round. The community college notes it can provide college search resources and help students strengthen certain foundational skills, and it points families toward dual-credit offerings that let high schoolers get a head start on college credit, according to Waubonsee Community College. Students can also access tutoring and academic coaching at the college's Tutoring Center, the same page states.
A Look Inside the Technical Education Center
For families curious about Waubonsee's own campus, two special pre-event facility tours are available by pre-registration, the college's announcement notes. Shaw Local reports that pre-registered attendees can tour the campus starting at 5 p.m. on Oct. 5, ahead of the main event.
One of those tours spotlights the college's Technical Education Center, a 100,000-square-foot facility home to premier programs in Automotive Collision and Refinishing Technology, Automotive Service Technology, and Welding Technology, per Waubonsee's release. Shaw Local's account similarly describes the center as featuring automotive and welding technology laboratories.
Free Buses Aim to Widen Access
Getting to Sugar Grove is no longer a barrier for families without a car. Waubonsee is providing free round-trip bus service from its Aurora Downtown Campus to the Sugar Grove Campus, the college states, with advance registration required to sign up for the College Night Bus. Shaw Local specifies that the bus will depart from Waubonsee's downtown campus at 18 S. River St. in Aurora, framing the service as a way to provide access for local students who might otherwise skip the fair.
With registration open for both the bus and the pre-event tours, families weighing where to send their teenagers next fall have a single evening on the calendar to compare notes from more than 100 schools, sit in on workshops about financial aid and majors, and see Waubonsee's own labs up close, all without paying for gas or admission.
