An SUV plowed through the front facade of The Heavy Anchor, a longtime South St. Louis bar and music venue in the Bevo neighborhood, on Saturday evening. The crash damaged the building so severely that city inspectors condemned it the following day, forcing the beloved venue to close indefinitely.
The wreck happened at The Heavy Anchor's longtime home on the 5200 block of Gravois Avenue, according to FOX 2. Only two people were inside at the time, a bartender and a single patron, and neither was injured, according to KSDK. Social media posts had circulated claiming people were hurt in the crash, but FOX 2 reports those claims were not accurate.
The timing made the damage especially painful for the venue's owners. Josh and Jodie Timbrook opened The Heavy Anchor in April 2011 after working in audio production and the music business, and per KSDK's report, the couple was celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary the very night the SUV hit their building. The bar had also been scheduled to host a local punk music showcase that same Saturday, per FOX 2.
City Shuts Down the Damaged Building
The St. Louis Building Division officially condemned the structure on Sunday, per the same KSDK report, closing The Heavy Anchor indefinitely while the extent of the structural damage to the front facade is addressed. FOX 2 reports the owners have since been focused on cleanup of the business, with volunteers turning out to help clear debris and get the site in order.
The Timbrooks have expressed gratitude to those volunteers, according to FOX 2, and have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover both repair costs and wages for displaced employees while they wait for insurance coverage to come through. FOX 2 reports the fundraiser is accepting donations from the public as the couple works out next steps for the venue's future.
Ward Leader and Neighboring Businesses Rally Support
St. Louis Alderwoman Anne Schweitzer moved quickly to organize relief, launching her own Rebuild the Heavy Anchor GoFundMe campaign on Sunday. It raised more than $30,000 within 24 hours to help with building repairs and to cover wages for staff left without work.
Support has also come from elsewhere in the South St. Louis restaurant scene. Steve's Hot Dogs pledged Sunday to donate $2 from every Thunderstruck Dog sold at its South Grand and Chesterfield locations between September 7 and September 20 to benefit The Heavy Anchor during its closure, according to KSDK.
A Cultural Anchor for South City's Arts Scene
The Heavy Anchor has long been a foundational independent venue for live music and local comedy in South St. Louis, hosting Comedy Shipwreck, an open-mic stand-up series that has run continuously since at least 2013, according to Do314. Its sudden closure lands just weeks after another South City neighborhood staple, Stan's Bar on Macklind Avenue, was heavily damaged by an accidental electrical fire on August 25, adding to a recent string of abrupt closures hitting the area's independent bar scene.
Gravois Avenue's Long History of Dangerous Crashes
The crash also lands amid ongoing scrutiny of Gravois Avenue, the state highway running past The Heavy Anchor's front door. MoDOT crash data shows 22 people were killed in vehicle crashes along the 5.7-mile Gravois Avenue corridor between 2020 and 2024, including eight pedestrians, according to KSDK's earlier reporting. Over that same span, the corridor saw 77 serious injuries and 871 minor injuries from crashes, with 16 serious injuries and 31 minor injuries involving pedestrians.
MoDOT is currently studying traffic fixes for the Route 30 corridor, which includes Gravois Avenue, evaluating options like lane reductions and enhanced pedestrian crossings through late 2027. But major resurfacing and construction tied to that study are not scheduled to begin until fall 2029, leaving residents and business owners along the corridor to contend with the road's risks in the meantime.
