A trackway fire near San Francisco's 24th Street Mission BART station disrupted service Thursday afternoon before crews extinguished the flames, according to Mission Local. The incident produced delays, rerouted trains and service gaps across the system.
KRON4, citing a BART spokesperson, reported a major delay in all directions on the San Francisco Line because of an equipment problem on the track at 24th Street Mission. The Red Line had no service during the disruption.
Red and Green Lines Hit Hardest
The Green Line was also suspended between Berryessa and Daly City, according to SFGATE. BART directed riders to use alternate trains for transfers at Bayfair, depending on their direction of travel.
Passengers headed to SFO were directed to take the Yellow Line and transfer to an SFO train at Millbrae Station. BART said service continued to all of its stations during the incident.
The station's role in the Mission
The disruption affected a station that serves as a major neighborhood access point. According to BART's 2024 Station Profile Survey, 77% of customers at 24th St. Mission Station walk from home to BART, the highest share among the stations surveyed. BART reported average 2025 ridership of 180,649 passenger trips on weekdays, compared with 108,449 on Saturdays and 78,691 on Sundays. A separate infrastructure fire earlier this month also disrupted service. BART said a fire at a power substation near Daly City on Tuesday, September 8, damaged train-control equipment and a traction-power cable, according to the agency's incident update.
Muni Offered an Alternate Route
Muni also offered service between Daly City and Embarcadero Station, giving riders a way to bypass the affected BART segment. The alternatives helped maintain connections while trains were rerouted.
By the time the fire was extinguished, the disruption had affected the Thursday afternoon commute. The available reports did not specify the fire's cause or when full service resumed.
