A 20-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, both from Sikeston, were airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries after their southbound Toyota Camry pulled into the path of a westbound Chevrolet Silverado at the intersection of Route ZZ and Route Z, about two miles west of Sikeston, around 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
The crash was reported by Heartland News, which cited a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report describing the Camry pulling directly into the Silverado's path. According to Missouri State Highway Patrol records, the crash was officially investigated by Trooper W. A. Wadlington and the department's MCIU Team #4 under Incident #260409737, with Troop E in Southeast Missouri handling the case. The driver of the Silverado, a 33-year-old man from Dudley, Missouri, was not injured in the collision.
Both vehicles involved were totaled, per the same crash report, and official documentation listed seatbelt usage for the Camry's driver and passenger as unknown at the time of reporting. Both Camry occupants were flown to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Scott County crash came just one day after a separate two-vehicle collision on US 61 in neighboring New Madrid County killed two juveniles and injured three others, marking Troop E's 43rd and 44th traffic fatalities of the year, per Missouri State Highway Patrol figures. Troop E covers multiple counties across Southeast Missouri, and the back-to-back serious crashes add to a grim run for the region this year.
Under Missouri Revised Statutes § 304.351, drivers approaching or turning at an intersection are legally required to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic or vehicles already occupying the roadway. National traffic safety research cited by Eng & Woods found that unsignalized rural and suburban intersections account for roughly 65 percent of all intersection fatalities nationwide, reflecting how often driver misjudgment at rural stops turns deadly.
Recent Road Work Near the Crash Site
A stretch of Route ZZ near Sikeston has been the subject of paving and shoulder-widening work. MoDOT had also announced plans in May 2023 to replace five regional bridges across Southeast Missouri, including the Route Z bridge over Drainage Ditch 1 in Scott County, part of a broader effort to upgrade aging rural infrastructure in the area.
Saturday's crash follows an earlier fatal collision in Rice County, Minnesota; Hoodline's prior report on a teen's death covered a separate two-vehicle crash there in 2024. No further updates on the condition of the two air-evacuated victims have been released.
