Two people were shot Friday, September 25, 2026, in Atlanta's historic West End neighborhood, in the 800 block of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard near the site of the former Mall West End. Atlanta Fire Rescue and Atlanta Police secured the parking lot outside a Krispy Kreme on the boulevard as they responded to the scene.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department reported that both victims were awake and alert when officers arrived. Police have not released the ages or identities of the two people who were shot, and officials have not confirmed whether they were taken to a hospital or treated at the scene, per the outlet's report.
Investigators have not disclosed what led up to the gunfire, and it remains unclear whether any suspects have been taken into custody. The investigation remains active and ongoing, according to authorities cited in the same report.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
The stretch of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard where Friday's shooting happened has seen repeated gun violence in recent years. In a report published September 10, 2025, 11Alive described a shooting in the same 800 block that killed 20-year-old Saikou Dem and left a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to Atlanta Police Department statements.
In September 2023, a shootout on Evans Street near the mall property left three men dead — a 17-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 38-year-old — after an initial gunman opened fire and was killed when a victim returned fire, 11Alive reported. Later, on January 2, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred at 321 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW.
Violence along the corridor predates the mall's decline, too. In January 2013, an Atlanta Police officer was shot in the face while chasing a suspect on foot in the same 800 block during a reported drug investigation near the mall, according to Patch. The officer survived and the suspect was arrested.
Deadly Dispute Inside a Nearby McDonald's
Hoodline previously reported on a fatal McDonald's shooting just blocks away. In December 2023, a dispute between customers at a McDonald's at 1166 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW ended in the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Tamanika Woods. A suspect in her 20s was detained, though charges had not yet been disclosed, according to Hoodline.
More recently, in June 2026, Zone 4 officers investigated a shooting on Cascade Avenue SW near Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW after finding a 21-year-old victim conscious and breathing inside a vehicle, 11Alive reported. The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Redevelopment Reshaping the West End
The violence comes as the neighborhood undergoes a major physical transformation. The Mall West End, located along the same corridor near Friday's shooting scene, officially closed in January 2025 to make way for a $450 million redevelopment into One West End, a 12-acre mixed-use complex slated for more than 800 rental units and 125,000 square feet of retail space, according to Urbanize Atlanta.
To keep commercial activity going during construction, several longtime mall businesses, including American Deli and The Burning Sands, were slated to relocate in early 2025 to a temporary space at 850 Oak Street, while Planet Fitness was expected to remain open on-site during the first construction phase, according to WCLK. The corridor remains a hub of foot traffic and daily commerce even as the old mall structure gives way to new construction.
Zone Crime Numbers Show a Downward Trend
City officials have touted broader improvements in public safety across the area. Official Atlanta Police Department crime figures presented by municipal leaders showed total crime in APD Zone 4, which includes the West End, dropped 23% in 2025, earning the precinct the city's 2025 Crime Reduction Award, with Zone 4 recording the largest percentage reduction of any APD zone that year.
Citywide, Atlanta Police statistics released in early 2026 showed a 48% drop in homicides and roughly a 35% drop in robberies compared to the same period the previous year, according to 11Alive, with officials citing proactive patrols and expanded security technology as key factors. Those citywide gains sit alongside the string of shootings that have continued to strike this particular stretch of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, underscoring the gap between broad statistical trends and the lived experience of residents and business owners along the corridor.
Police have not said whether Friday's shooting is connected to any of the prior incidents on the block, and the investigation remains ongoing.
