A 50-year-old Upper Marlboro woman has died four days after she was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Landover, according to Prince George's County police. Tamica Wilson was hit on August 31 near Columbia Park Road and was rushed to a hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries before dying on September 4.
Officers responded to the intersection at roughly 1:10 pm that Monday after a vehicle traveling eastbound struck Wilson as she attempted to cross the highway, according to the Prince George's County Police Department. The driver remained at the scene and was not injured, police said. Investigators with the department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit are now trying to determine why Wilson was struck, and whether she was crossing within a marked crosswalk or had a pedestrian signal remains an open question central to that inquiry.
A Familiar Stretch of Road
In August 2023, 58-year-old moped rider Archie Alston was killed at the same crossing while trying to get across the highway, as previously reported by Daily Voice. Martin Luther King Jr. Highway itself is a 6.53-mile state-maintained arterial that carries between 18,000 and 41,000 vehicles a day, with posted speeds ranging from 30 to 45 mph across a string of signalized intersections linking Seat Pleasant, Landover, and Lanham, per Grokipedia.
The corridor has seen other crashes in recent years. Wilson's death is under investigation by PGPD's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.
Speed and Design Feed a Countywide Crisis
Prince George's County consistently leads all Maryland jurisdictions in traffic deaths, recording 93 fatalities in 2025 and 140 in 2023, according to the Maryland Daily Record. Local advocates have long pointed to road design and speed as key drivers of that disproportionate toll. Statewide, excessive speed is a common factor in fatal crashes.
Pedestrian safety remains a concern across the wider Washington region, though Wilson's collision happened in daylight, around 1:10 pm.
