Doctors at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital just became the first in Florida to guide a needle into a patient's body while looking through an augmented reality headset instead of glancing at a monitor across the room. The hospital says it is now the first medical center in the state to offer access to the MediView XR90 surgical navigation and intelligence platform, an extended reality system that lets physicians view and combine multiple imaging modalities during a procedure.
According to South Florida Hospital News, the technology is designed to support visualization, precision, and a more seamless experience for both patients and care teams. The system pulls previously acquired CT images and turns them into a holographic 3D image of a patient's anatomy, which then appears directly inside a physician's headset while they perform an ultrasound-guided procedure. Rather than blending imaging after the fact, MediView fuses CT and ultrasound data in real time, giving physicians a more complete view of what they're targeting without exposing the patient to additional radiation during the intervention.
Dr. Kevin Stadtlander, site director of the interventional radiology residency program at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, said the technology proves most useful when multiple imaging modalities need to be combined during a single procedure. The hospital's report notes that better visualization has the potential to improve safety, accuracy, and efficiency across the board.
A Liver Biopsy Becomes the Proving Ground
The first case performed with MediView at Weston involved a patient with a small liver lesion tucked into a difficult-to-reach area of the body, according to the hospital's account. Physicians used CT and ultrasound simultaneously through the headset system and were able to perform the biopsy with greater confidence than a standard approach might have allowed.
Because the headset keeps imaging information floating in the physician's field of view, operators can keep their focus directly on the patient throughout the procedure instead of turning away toward external screens. Stadtlander said that steadier visual access makes certain procedures easier than before and that improved visualization alone can boost overall performance during a case.
Starting With Biopsies, Eyeing Bigger Procedures
Cleveland Clinic Weston plans to use the system initially for biopsies, prioritizing complex cases where extra imaging detail is likely to matter most. The hospital expects to eventually expand into treatment procedures such as thermal ablation as physicians grow more comfortable with the platform.
Beyond individual patient cases, the hospital says the MediView system will support clinical care and research, and is expected to aid future physician education and collaboration. Weston plans to work with colleagues across the broader Cleveland Clinic system as the technology's use expands.
The XR90 Arrives in Florida
MediView XR's XR90 is an augmented reality platform now in use at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital.
The XR90 itself carries a notable regulatory history. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted the platform 510(k) clearance in July 2023, marking the first FDA clearance for an augmented reality device that combines live imaging with 3D extended reality visualization for use before and during procedures, per PR Newswire. The world's first clinical procedure using the cleared platform followed in November 2023 at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medicine, where interventional radiology chief Dr. Bradley Pua used it during a mediastinal lymph node biopsy, as reported by G-MedTech.

MediView has drawn significant institutional muscle behind its technology. The company closed a $24 million Series A funding round in October 2025 led by GE HealthCare, with strategic backing from health systems including Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, PR Newswire reported. The XR90 platform itself integrates Microsoft's HoloLens 2 augmented reality headsets and operates in partnership with GE HealthCare to overlay 3D anatomical holograms during needle-guided interventions.

Market Research Future estimated the U.S. augmented reality market in healthcare at $770.52 million in 2024, projecting growth to $1.07 billion in 2025 and as high as $28.97 billion by 2035.
