The Del Mar Fairgrounds will host something a little more magical this weekend, as 1,200 synchronized drones take to the night sky to recreate scenes straight out of the Wizarding World. The DroneArt Show: Harry Potter touches down at the fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. both evenings and gates opening two hours early so fans can stake out a good spot on the lawn.
The touring production is co-produced by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences, live-entertainment ticketing platform Fever, and drone technology firm Nova Sky Stories, part of the franchise's global 25 Years of Magic celebrations, according to Fever Newsroom. The Del Mar stop follows a run that organizers say has appeared in 45 cities and drawn at least 300,000 spectators, as reported by FOX 5 San Diego & KUSI News, which first detailed the Del Mar dates. The tour has drawn more than 300,000 global visitors.
What the Show Will Recreate
According to FOX 5 San Diego & KUSI News, the performance will depict Harry capturing the Golden Snitch from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the 2001 film based on the book written by J.K. Rowling. The drones will also form Dementors and other dark-arts imagery, with the outlet describing Dementors as wraith-like creatures that force humans and wizards to relive their darkest memories. The show runs roughly 60 minutes with a short intermission and pairs 1,200 drones with a live electric violinist performing themes from the film score.
The tour's lighting design, which syncs ground-level stage cues with the drones' aerial flight paths, was created by lighting designer Mike Wood, according to his own project page documenting the production. FOX 5 San Diego & KUSI News reports the fairgrounds will also offer themed merchandise, including wands, scarves and collectibles, along with treats and beverages for purchase. Attendees are expected to arrive early to claim a good viewpoint once the gates open two hours before each show.
A Shift Away From Fireworks on the Coast
The Del Mar Fairgrounds, sprawled across 370 acres at 2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, has traditionally relied on major fireworks displays, including the annual San Diego County Fair Independence Day finale, according to KPBS. That history makes an outdoor drone show a newer style of evening entertainment for the venue. The shift mirrors a broader regional trend: SeaWorld San Diego worked with the Coastal Commission to gain approval for up to 110 drone shows, which could reduce coastal water pollution and noise, as detailed by the Coast Law Group.
Running a display of this scale isn't as simple as launching a few consumer drones. Federal rules normally limit a single pilot to operating just one drone at a time, so a 1,200-drone show requires an official operational waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration under 14 CFR § 107.35. The event's prohibited-items list includes drones.
Tickets and the Tour's Bigger Picture
DroneArt Show: Harry Potter tickets start at $31.42 and are available for purchase on Feverup, according to FOX 5 San Diego & KUSI News. The tour includes numerous U.S. venues.
San Diego marks just the latest American stop for a production that premiered its U.S. leg on June 13 at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, featuring a special opening hosted by actress Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the film series, according to Fever Newsroom. Hoodline previously covered the tour's Sacramento stop in a story titled 1,200 Drones Bring Harry Potter to Sacramento's Cal Expo This August, as well as the Philadelphia-area and Denver dates on the same national run.
