A 10-year-old girl died Tuesday evening after the Jeep her mother was driving failed to make a curve on Bell Road in Antioch, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a tree. The 40-year-old mother survived the crash, which happened around 6:50 p.m. in the 3500 block of Bell Road.
According to Fox 17 News, the woman was driving a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound with her daughter in the passenger seat when, for reasons that remain unknown, she did not turn with a right-hand curve in the road. The Jeep crossed into oncoming traffic before leaving the roadway entirely and striking a tree on the passenger side, where the girl was seated.
Both mother and daughter had their seat belts on at the time of the crash, the outlet reported. Investigators found no signs that the driver was impaired, and the specific reason she failed to navigate the curve has not been determined.
Investigation Continues Into Cause
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to NewsChannel 5, which confirmed there were no signs of impairment in the driver. No further details about the crash have been released, and authorities have not said whether any additional findings are expected as the investigation continues.
The stretch of Bell Road where the crash occurred sits in Antioch, and the circumstances that led the Jeep to leave its lane on the curve have not been explained publicly. Police have not released the names of the mother or daughter involved in the crash.
