A 23-year-old man is dead after being shot in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood early Friday morning, found unresponsive outside with gunshot wounds to his chest and face. Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene, and so far no one has been arrested.
The shooting happened around 6:55 a.m. in the 1500 block of East 72nd Place, according to Chicago Sun-Times. The outlet reports that no other people were injured in the shooting, and Area 1 detectives are now handling the investigation.
Details beyond that remain scarce. No suspect description, motive, or weapon has been released, and it is not yet known whether any arrests will follow as detectives continue piecing together what happened on that block Friday morning.
A Familiar Stretch of East 72nd Place
This is not the first deadly shooting to strike that specific stretch of South Shore. In an earlier case on East 72nd Place, a 22-year-old man was killed after an unknown male suspect walked into the apartment he was in and shot him multiple times, according to ABC7 Chicago. That earlier case, like Friday's, began with a victim found inside the broader South Shore community with no immediate suspect identified.
South Shore has seen other fatal shootings in recent months as well. A 37-year-old man, Ryan Bussell, was fatally shot in front of a business in the 7300 block of South Stony Island Avenue after a woman reportedly opened fire at the location, per the Sun-Times. Separately, a South Shore shooting inside a home in the 6700 block of South Jeffery Boulevard killed 51-year-old Marcos Almeida, which ABC7 reported marked the city's first known homicide of 2026.
Another South Shore case, this one inside an apartment building, left 25-year-old Amanda McClendon dead and a 23-year-old woman in fair condition, the Sun-Times reported at the time.
Citywide Numbers Show a Mixed Picture
The neighborhood's violence fits into a broader citywide pattern that has crept upward this year. Chicago recorded 210 homicides through the end of June 2026, an increase of nearly 6 percent compared with the same period in 2025, according to WTTW News. The station also reported 686 shootings and 858 shooting victims citywide during that same six-month stretch, along with 139 shootings and 43 homicides in June alone.
Police Area 1, which covers the South Side north of 79th Street and includes South Shore, saw a sharper jump earlier in the year. The area recorded 114 shootings and 32 homicides through April 5, 2026 — increases of 25 percent and 52 percent, respectively, compared with the year before, per the Chicago Tribune. Citywide, homicides had already climbed to 105 through the first week of April, up slightly from 98 during the same period in 2025, the Tribune reported.
That uptick follows a year that otherwise trended lower. Chicago recorded its lowest homicide total in 60 years in 2025, the Tribune reported in January. The same year also saw reported robberies, armed robberies, carjackings and burglaries decline compared with the prior year, according to WTTW.
For now, Friday's shooting adds one more name to a growing list of unsolved and recent violence in South Shore, with Area 1 detectives continuing to investigate and no arrests announced.
