Thirty-six dogs are recovering at Animal Humane Society facilities in Golden Valley after being pulled from an unlicensed breeder in Cass County on Thursday, where they were found living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The group includes golden retrievers, goldendoodles and a mix of other breeds, all of them now under veterinary and behavioral care as the shelter works to get them ready for new homes.
According to fox9.com, the property owner handed the dogs over to Animal Humane Society because they were no longer able to care for them. The outlet reported the dogs were in unsafe and unsanitary conditions before the rescue, though further detail on what that involved was not disclosed. As reported by CBS News Minnesota, the shelter's goal is to eventually get all 36 dogs adopted.
Medical and Behavioral Care Underway in Golden Valley
Once the dogs arrived at the shelter's Golden Valley locations, staff began providing both medical care and behavioral support, the same fox9.com report noted. That dual approach is standard for animals coming out of large-scale breeding situations, where dogs often need both physical treatment and time to adjust to human handling and a less chaotic environment. The shelter has not said when the adult dogs and puppies in the group will be ready for adoption, according to the outlet's reporting.
Minnesota's Licensing Rules for Commercial Breeders
Minnesota law requires commercial dog and cat breeders to be licensed and inspected, per the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. State statute also lays out when the board must refuse to issue an initial commercial-breeder license, including when an applicant violates specified statutes or fails to meet the law's requirements, according to the Minnesota Revisor of Statutes. It was not established whether the Cass County property owner faced any citations or other enforcement action tied to this case.
Part of a Broader Pattern of Breeder Rescues
Large-scale rescues from breeding operations have shown up elsewhere in Minnesota recently. More than 100 dogs and puppies pulled from commercial breeders touched down at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie on a flight arranged by the Bissell Pet Foundation, according to CBS Minnesota. Federal agencies have also signaled increased scrutiny of breeders nationally, with the USDA stating it had cancelled, denied, suspended or revoked licenses issued to six dog breeders as part of a coordinated effort with the DOJ, DHS and HHS targeting chronic dog welfare violators.
For now, the 36 dogs rescued from Cass County remain under care in Golden Valley while Animal Humane Society works toward its stated goal of finding adoptive homes for the entire group. No timeline for when they'll be available has been released.
