A 69-year-old man died after a three-vehicle crash on San Antonio's West Side Thursday night, and police are now investigating whether another driver was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Everyone involved in the wreck was rushed to a hospital, where the pickup truck driver was pronounced dead.

According to KSAT, San Antonio police said the crash happened just after 9 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of General McMullen Drive and Wallace Street. A separate report from Yahoo News likewise placed officers at South General McMullen Drive and Wallace Street around 9 p.m., while a report from Fox San Antonio identified the location as the intersection of General McMullen Drive and Castroville Road around the same time — accounts that conflict on the precise crash site.

Police told reporters a pickup truck and a Cadillac collided in the intersection after one of the vehicles turned in front of the other. The impact then sent the Cadillac into an SUV that was waiting in a turning lane, according to Fox San Antonio's account of the crash. San Antonio police, firefighters and EMS all responded to the scene, per the Yahoo News report.

Driver Investigated for Possible Intoxication

Police said they are investigating whether the Cadillac's driver, described as a man in his 30s, was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Officers have not provided an update on his condition or on the conditions of the other people involved in the collision, the station's report notes. San Antonio police have also not released the identity of the 69-year-old man who died, and the investigation remains ongoing.

A Corridor With a Troubled Safety Record

Thursday's deadly wreck adds to a string of crashes clustered around the Wallace Street intersection in recent years. A KSAT review found eight crashes at or near that intersection since 2021, and the city has designated a 1.9-mile stretch of the South General McMullen corridor as part of its High-Injury Network, according to earlier KSAT reporting on planned safety upgrades there. That same report detailed an earlier crash at the intersection in which a 74-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by a southbound driver while crossing South General McMullen Drive.

In response to the pattern of crashes, the city has applied for $1 million in Highway Safety Improvement Program grant funding to improve safety along General McMullen between Commerce Street and U.S. Highway 90. Proposed upgrades include sidewalk improvements, ADA-accessible ramps and high-visibility striping, along with new traffic signals using intelligent transportation system technology that could track pedestrians through the crosswalk.

The corridor's history includes other fatal crashes beyond Thursday's. A 20-year-old motorcyclist, Daniel Arredondo III, died in August 2025 at General McMullen and Wallace Street after crashing into a sedan that was turning onto Wallace Street, according to a San Antonio Express-News report that also noted it was the fifth motorcycle death in the city in less than two weeks at the time. Police determined there were no criminal elements in that earlier collision after the sedan driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

For now, investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened Thursday night and whether the Cadillac driver will face consequences tied to the intoxication investigation. San Antonio police have said the investigation into the three-vehicle crash is ongoing.
